View Full Version : Performance Bikes
I've steered clear of Performance Bikes for quite a while, seems to have been a pale imitation of some of the better mags.
However, I've been visiting my wife in hospital these last two weeks and PB was the only bike related mag in the hospital shop, so I bought it to read while my wife was off for some tests.
I must say, since I last bought it, they've revamped it a bit and I quite like it. Instead of going down the same old monthly diet of "GSX-R1000 vs R1 vs ZX10 vs Blade Giant Shootout", they seem to concentrate a bit more on the types of bike that the ordinary joe gets into and the real world 'tinkering in the shed' type projects.
The issue that I got included our very own Fred and his 50,000 mile 748, and a real nice 'Fortuna NSR250'.
I found it a good read. Might even buy it again

you'd be better off buying next months instead mate... :) bit silly buying the one you've already read :frog:
It was given a re-launch about 5-6 months back. Definitely much better, but there's obviously a temptation to go back to the old style.

Must admit I''ve bought the last few also, as I was following the speed record bike and the 9R rebuild - its a much more interesting read than it used to be.
The 748 article was novel and I wondered if the rider had any connections here at all?
I'm sure some of his tips would be of use!

I agree it is worth a look now it has been revamped. I liked the NSR, even found myself looking at the web site mentioned in the article at what project kits they do and then looking for a project bike on e bay and import dealers. He! He!

Racer Magazine is the only one I subscribe to and if I fancy a read and am passing the shops I would buy Performance bike for the mixture of road bikes, and project bikes featured. And I agree with Jools they dont seem to be doing all that pub talk shoot out stuff these days which is a good thing.
I still think BIKE is the best and is the only one I subscribe to. Ride is ok and Performance Bikes is much better than it used to be. I buy it most months.

The only one I get on subscription is Classic Bike, but I don`t pay for it, its an annual present bought for me!
I also like Classic Racer normaly but Pm & Superbike but cant stand Bike.
I`ve said me bit so I`ll go now!
I get Ride on subscription but have to say although has best content it is a bit of a thin read. Motorcycle Racer very good then Bike.
I used to be an avid buyer of PB, from the days when it was Motorcycle Mechanics. They did project bikes like the X7 and other old bu**gered stuff that the real world biker would hoon around on. Get yer bike on the road for a 100 quid articles. How to blag a better deal.
What's his face Robinson used to do the tech' section and it was good stuff too.
They lost the plot for about 10 years and I never bothered with them, going over to Fast Bikes. Yeah they had crap letters and catered for the more 'wayward' bod. But their write ups on bikes were excellent, and if a bike was crap they said so. Something the other mag's never would. FB also did the best write up's on the T8's too.
PB is good now though, it seems to be going back to what it had as core values when it first started up. No bad thing either.
Ains.

Tyga performance are great they always have new stuff and it is incredible very cheap and the quality is to die for. Was checking out the welding on the subframes just brilliant. Fibreglassing is very good and well finished.

I hadn't read PB for many years until I bought this edition (obviously! :D ).
To be honest, even apart from that great 748 article, ;) I thought it was a pretty interesting read.
Hmmm...
it's horses for courses as to which one is the very best mag out there. we've all got different tastes, so it's good that there are a variety of mags.
For my tastes I think that TWO is one of the best. Neil McKenzie does a great job of being a bloke who knows what he's talking about (having been there, done that, to a far greater degree than other journos) without coming across as a 'been there, done that, self opinionated tw*t'.
I quite like BIKE although I don't buy it regularly, don't find much of any interest in RIDE. Used to quite like Fast Bikes, but I've gone off that since they seem to become embroiled in a personality clash with SuperBike and vice versa - the continual sniping between the two editorial teams has put me right off both mags and in any case the content in them is very samey
Bought PB so will let you know what I think (not that anyone gives a royal toss what I think of course).
