Chain fitting question

I have fitted chains before and they have all had hollow rivet links

came to fit my new chain today from band c and found the rivet link to have solid pins?

was an absolute sod to get pressed on and only then did i realise therewas no hollow bit to peen over

there is no split pin so its not that type - it is a tsubaki x ring chain

anyone any bright ideas or is it just they have supplied the wrong link?

I think you need a special tool for the Tsubaki chains. You hit the end with a hammer then turn it 90 degrees to make four flats on the rivet.

that sounds lie the one though i have fitted 2 tsubaki chains before and they have had hollow pins

All depends on the type of Tsubaki chain - the Omega I put on the 748 had solid but the Alpha on the SS had hollow ... I think!

You just need a different type of head on the rivetting tool I think.

Hi,

Fitted a few of these using the method recommended by the supplier B&c Express.

Having had the same trouble as you I was shocked to be told to use two hammers either side to "gently" peen over the rivets.

So, making sure the chain is dangling on to a block of wood on the floor, with lots of rag round it to ensure you don't scratch the swing arm, carefully clack away. Be careful not to put any side strain on the chain.

Check with vernier calipers and measure the peening. You only need 0.05mm or so.

Done 20K thus fitted on a couple of bikes including track days.

The Sigma R uses a hard link. Norman's method works fine. Just needs a little patience. Don't press the link on too far. Measure across the already joined links and set the same. Peen the ric=vets heads over and you're done.

Worth the trouble. They are excellent chains....................don't snap like DID ;)

You need a proper chain link tool like mine comes in handy when replacing that snapped DID chain, fixing the damaged engine case is a little harder :P
