Sadly, its just too strange that only early this morning I wanted to search down the crank case protector that had been mentioned here in the past.
Bad luck and hope that you were ok.

stu748, If you do manage to make some. I would be up for one aswell. had thought about knocking one up. getting a bit fed up of reading these posts and not being prepared.
We should make a list of all the BRANDS that are snapping, as I will be buying a new chain VERY soon.
Hi Stu
Many people will be interested the post below includes the item required, count me in please

Tbh imo chains snap for one reason mostly - poor maintenance or mal-adjustment. I know sometimes you get batches of bad chains but.....
I've seen some shocking examples of chain maintenance.
My Sprint RS chain is 3 years & 15k miles old, it has been adjusted twice. The one of my VFR750 went to 30k miles in 7 years with no more than a couple of adjustments as well.
Asides from oil/filter changes it's one of the most important maintenance items and one of the easiest to fug up. Putting small 14t gearbox sprockets on stresses them as well - best stick to 15t and go up on the rear sprocket instead if you want to gear the bike down.
Sorry to here the news mate.I am in the middle of knocking up a few(10) crankcase protectors.

Stainless one for me please Stu...... :D
Course the really clever thing to do would be to incorporate the "breakage" guard into the sprocket cover and make the whole shebang in Titanium.
Might just have to do a bit more research into this one.
thanks for the replies guys. the chain was the orginal one that came with the bike, only 7500 miles on it:(
from wot i can see it's only the alternator cover thats damaged, rang ducati dublin today 580 euro for the cover plus 2 hours to fit:(
had 7 days in france and tickets to french gp booked and paid for! won't be able to go now gutted
suppose it could have been worse!

yep, it could have been worse - it could have been me ;)
seriously - ebay or breakers :eureka:
It occurs to me reading this thread that chain breakages are not that uncommon. Especially given that Ducati have designed and marketed a part to prevent damage.
Now they have stopped selling it, maybe we should use our collective voices and demand that Ducati UK put pressure to bear on the factory to supply these things again.
I'm going to start a separate thread on this sunject so that folks can vote, and maybe one of the MT can give DUK a call and tell them there is a groundswell of opinion and can they, DUK, prevail?
What do you think guys?

Yeti, sounds like a good idea.

I hear where you are coming from, but if you look at the threads discussing chain failures in detail, it obvious that actually most are due to aftermarket chains...and in particular one manufacturer.
I don't think it is an issue with standard Ducati chains than any other brand of motorbike...but there does definately appear to be a trend towards DID chains letting go at a fairly young age...even those well maintained.
And for info, mine went about 8 months ago...fitted by myself (PhD in mech Eng.) aligned perfectly, very very well maintained etc...and it went without warning whilst doing about 30 mph...make...DID.

Those that can do...those that cant teach.........:lol::frog:
With regard to chains, this time i used a brand new genuine ducati chain from a new 999s (bike was stripped for racing hence the chain was going in the bin after 0 miles !!!)
and after 3000 miles it still doesnt need adjusting. granted it stuck on an old 916 which may lask the power of a 999S but i reckon even although it looks a bit naff in grey it will last for another 10k before getting tired.
Always been the same on honda, genuine chains are often not as expensive as you think and last for bloody ages

Mine too snapped on Tuesday at Oulton, exiting Fulstones chicane chasing Norman from this site and losing a little on the pull up the hill... i lost all power....
turned out it was the chain snapping.
Bought myself a split link today (searches the whole of Cheshire y'day for one).... WIll fit that for 1 day to take to Louigi and get a new one fitted.
FYI it's a DiD 525 and over 2 years old and looked rough anyway.
No other damage to the bike at all.
Can you put me down for one as well please?
Does anyone have any GREAT quality pics of it ? The chain guard I mean, as I am thinking of seeing how much it would cost to make them
Stu, One for me too please mate just U2U or contact me money waiting.
