I am attempting to retrofit an 02 998 engine into a 98 916 frame. I received a known good engine, complete wiring harness, thottle bodies, ecu, airbox and sensors.

Off of the 916, I used the front wiring harness, instrument cluster, ignition, sidestand, coils and tank.

The engine is in, but it won't start. Here is what it is doing and what I know so far. When you turn on the bike, all the electrical works. (lights, horn, signals ect.) I DO NOT hear the fuel pump and the bike will not turn over. (nothing at all from the starter). I do get a yellow light that comes on on the gauges. (I have never seen this on before.) The light will turn off if I disconect the side stand switch plug (which I still have the self retracting kind). It looks like that switch was bypassed as the two wires coming off of the plug were connected together.

I have not hooked up the fans or the tail section wiring harness yet and one of the coils IS NOT attached to the frame yet as I had to relocate it. Any ideas out there??? Thanks in advance!!!

Well the front wiring harness is different, check out Lily's recent thread on her bikes starting problem as I posted the pin outs for both the 916 and 998

ive seen on race bikes they just cable tie the coils to the side of the frame on a piece of rubber, just the same place as they would go on a 998

Hi ducatiboy916

You may need one of these, unless you got hold of one with your parts.

Hmmm, interesting time of day to post about engine swaps
It sounds like you have an ignition interlock holding it off. The best thing to focus on is definitely the fuel pumps coming on - but it may just be a bad connection limiting the current that the ignition circuit needs, or even 'just' a bad earth.

What was wrong with the old 916 lump btw ?

Thanks guys for all the info. I do have the front harness for the 998 so I will start by installing that. And looking at all of the other info I should be able to work this out...thanks again!!!

And to answer Phil, at 32,000 miles she was starting to get tired and developed an oil presure problem...I had just had all the suspension redone, and found an awsome deal on this motor with only 2,000 miles. Not to mention I like to tinker and just can't leave well enough alone!!! :)

Thank you to all of you guys....the Duc is alive. Sometimes it takes others opinions to let me see the obvious. Thanks again!!!
