Race Fairing - QUIZ!

HISTORY
I recently bought a "race" fairing that had no cutouts for headlights.
Since I want to be able to use this on the road, I needed to make a circular cutout on LHS to line up with the dip beam headlight lens centreline.

PROBLEM
When the nose fairing is fitted over the lights, the centre of the headlight lens is no longer visible.

QUIZ
How did I accurately mark the centre of the headlight lens on the outside of the nose fairing?

Use an existing road fairing and place the race fairing inside - they should overlap?

Draw round the full hole of the headlight, which shows you exactly where the headlight is.

Now you can measure from the corners to centre the cut for your hole.

I did this with my DD bike fairings when marking up some cut-outs for it!

stick a piece of bluetack on your headlight in correct place....

dab tip with superglue.... then fit fairing....

it should then stick to inside :)

Hi Ricky,

My R1 has a race fairing and we used tracing paper to draw around the light unit and then traced that onto the race fairing. Carefully cut with a fret-saw and look how mine turned out!!! and we didnt have a road fairing to refer to either.

Drill two small holes approx where the hole is going to be.
stick a bit of paper on the light and cut the paper to the right shape.
fit fairing.
mark dots through the drilled holes onto the paper.
remove fairing.
remove paper.
stick paper to the fairing lining up the holes you marked.
cut.

Remember that I said "How did I accurately mark the centre of the headlight lens on the outside of the nose fairing?"..in other words, I have already done it.

METHOD
1. Remove fairing
2. Place "Workmate" in front of bike
3. Place DIY Store "Laser Leveller" on Workmate and aim it at the centre of the light.
4. Install fairing - caution not to bump into workmate!
5. Mark centre of light where laser dot projects onto fairing.

Hey presto - job done!!

I cut the hole by measuring the diameter of the len, then scribing a circle on the fairing (using an Art Shop "circle cutter"), then cut hole with my trusty old jigsaw.

Heh, that's far too high tech!

Ah.. a very cunning plan.
But after carefully aligning the laser and marking the spot with the sharpest of pencils - I'd've used a hole-saw on the end of a ferkin' great Hilti to finish it off!
So much more fun :lol:
