Quick question - if I hire a car in Europe, what are the rules about driving across a border into another country? Am I allowed to do that, do I have to declare to the car rental company at the time so that my insurance is valid etc.?
Off to work in Poland shortly, planning to hire a car to drive to Brno for the GP and was wondering about the legalities of it

Thanks
Martin

Most of them don`t like you to take cars across some of the eastern block borders.

But they are just Germans living in another country aren't they?

Tell the Hire Co. first, they may not let you take it abroad.
I've tried to hire a van here to go to Mugello and got a few refusals.

Had a Europcar for the last year in Switzerland (well, had 4 actually), take it over to France and Italy all the time.

Cheers guys

Spoke to Sixt rentals and they said no problem, seems it's just UK rentals that they don't like taking overseas..

Depends where you are, where you are going and what you're driving.

I worked in Dresden for 8 months a few years ago and wanted to drive to Prague for a long weekend. Had a mercedes A Class at the time and the rental company would not let me take it to Prague. However they were more than happy for me to take an Astra... Lovely.

Like i said, was about 5 years ago so the rules could have changed seen as we are now one biig happy european family!

Markymark is spot on depends who, what and where you wanna drive, some company's in France still wont let you take BMWs on their fleet to Itlay.

Checked with Sixt rentals - exactly as you say - no problem to take standard cars but they won't let me take the more prestige models across borders.

Race tickets booked today, Brno here I come :D :D
