As part of the service I removed the left hand engine cover to check the bolt for tightness, there was no gasket between the mating surfaces which the Haynes book said there should be, is this common, the bike is a 1998 748bip import. When I put it back should I be fitting a gasket or the thin sealant in the tube? The book also says that it is hard to get the cover off and shows a special tool to make to remove it. Mine almost fell off once the bolts were removed? It was oil tight when running so I am inclined to put it back how it was but I could not see any kind of sealant on the joining surface. I want to take this opportunity to remove the flywheel. Is it as simple as it looks, unbolt the retaining nut pull flywheel off shaft and unbolt the flywheel from the large starter motor gear, then put it back together but without the flywheel.

There is NO gasket between the two faces, you need the assembly paste which cures to semi hardness upon re- assembly.
The tool is simply a puller which pulls the two parts apart.

You can get the paste from any motor factors.

Why not fit a lightweight flywheel since you have the cover off too ?

I think he's planning to remove the fly wheel completely.

as yours is a older 748 the flywheel should come straight off

beware that you will need to leave the bike warm up a bit longer from cold than normal before riding away but the difference is quite noticable

Flywheel removal on them old uns?..........i thought they came off on their own?:lol: :lol:
