hI there i have decided to purchase my first nearly new bike and for the first time i can afford to buy a ducati, problem is not sure if it should be a 748 then put a power comamder in, or a 996, currently riding a yamaha fzr 1000 exup ru . I dont want to lose too much power can anyone give me a guide to buying a ducati of this callibre and what to look for the year im looking at is around the 1999 to 2003/4 depending on price ,would like mileage to be low too(price around £3000 to £4300). I understand that there a some things like service history really important is there other things to look for.

Hi Dave, you won't go wrong with either bike, but i would suggest the 748!

Did i mention that a friend of mine is selling a 748S in yellow, 3,700 miles, Ducati service history, 02 plate, in excellent condition, only just out of your price range at £4,800!!!!

Send me a PM if your interested.

So ugly or not BB, 749's are going for very little money and are cracking bikes !

i think they are cheap because they are ugly, they ARE a cracking bike until you step off of it, BUT FOR ME there is more to ownership than riding it, im just not inspired by the 749/999 shape, owning one for me would make cleaning my bike a chore!!

but value for money if you can put up with the looks

Also ride an Exup as a second bike, had it for years, and it takes a lot to match that engine, even now so you would be better off treating a Duke as a different kettle of fish. I understand that the 748 is a nice revvy engine, while the bigger bikes are more torquey (but still not as flexible as an exup). Handling and braking are obviously on a different planet, as is comfort. I would try before you buy, but remember that these bikes will not take the lack of maintenance that a jap bike will
