Holding the fuel hose whilst he is topping up the tank, another one of those low mpg bikes again. When will they fit a tank with a decent range on it.
Should have bought an ST.

I did not want to go there, so what are you saying, Ducati riders are a bunch of yankers?
Please I thought more of you especially as your a vinyl man.
I was going to start a Hi-fidelity style top 5 bands poll, but I think only you and me could have entered as we all know, real music is not made for cd's.

So who's bike are you putting down here 916 or 999, gotta be careful.

bike mad
18-Sep-2006, 17:47
yes I hope it's got a decent size tank,
but I dont like the exhaust at all,
it's an old style, I want a bike that looks new than a 999 not one that looks like a one of hand made 916,

749er
18-Sep-2006, 18:00
So who's bike are you putting down here 916 or 999, gotta be careful.

Granted that is probably not the finished article, but the 916 had a very organic style with rounded cans, rear sprocket, nose, fairings, bulbous tank and fairings, swooping swing arm.

the 999 is very angular, with slashes in the front fairing, triangular tank, creased fairings and seat unit

my problem with the bike in the picture is its a mixture of the two, so its not a coherent design. The swing arm/sprocket/cans are 916 (organic), the bit above the exhaust with the rear lights, the nose/mirrors/main fairings are very angular like the 999

so now having analysed it a bit more, there is no way it will look like that

If it looks like that I'll be straight down the dealer to buy a 999....

and...suddenly there will be a ground-swell of opinion that Ducati in fact made a pretty decent job of bringing the 916/99 into the 21st century by way of the substantially more comtemporary looking 999. Or is this fantasy?

I think at the end of the day they'll do a damn good job in comparison to some other designers for the rival companies.
At first I did not like the 999, but given a choice of late 999 or early 916, I'm not sure where I would go now, both have their good points. So I suppose the designers are trying to morph the best bits together, maybe after it has developed in a year or so it could satisfy the masses.

interestingly, even a lot of sections of the press are acknowledging that the 999 look is growing on them....still lots of designs/designers were not appreciated in there time. Van Gogh, Charles Rennie McIntosh.......

studied some of his work at Uni, he was a bit of a master of daylight in buildings but not given the credit he deserved, in this country at least.

But his style has been very influential, am sure you see it a lot in watches

Kilt on a bike would be well drafty!! Would scare the spectators during a crash for sure :-)

I doubt the actual bike is anything like what has been shown in the press, maybe the odd bit here or there, but thats all.

am sure the final design wont be some compromised blended affair

What would be truly radical is offering a choice of bodykit styles. I eally don't see why it's difficult given you can go to a minitwins race meeting and see any number of SV650's weaing all kinds of bodywork including 999 stuff.

Really. It's not difficult, is it? We are talking about a few brackets. Take a look at the DD paddock for example.

You order the bike unclothed and then specify the body kit. That way you sell a bike already customised to order and please lots of people at the same time. It's a logical extension of the DP fanchise goods anyway.

Looking at the sidestand i think the extra padding and gaffa tape will be standard. as if anything like the 916 its only a matter of time before it snaps like a twig but with all this padding it's sure to bounce back up. bravo ducati superb design and forward thinking as ever

look the same to me,
that's the problem,
I remember when the 999 came out, the man said that the new exhausts were made like they were so they had more room in side them to help with the baffling, more gas less noise, more power,
and it made sense to me and I like the look of the 999s rear so when I look at the pipes on the new bike I think it's old and cheap,
My mind is not made up, and wont be till I have seen the new bike and had time to take it in but the rear is not good,
:flame: :burn: :burn:

I'm thinking the rear pipes are a total dummy. They will have something a bit special in the pipeline (pardon the pun). Remember the exhaust on the Desmosedici test mule. NOW did that look the same when the bike was released???

I hope they do it the sedici way for the mono, very clever. I doubt that is the finished bike though, and it will look much better. Similarly with those pics of the hyper motard, I doubt it will have the rear lights from a 749 just stuck on the back like that

I cant see that the exhaust is the finished item as it doesnt follow the frames line very closely! Im still not overly happy with them going back to the 916 for inspiration but I guess until the bike is released we are still all guessing..... although am about to phone Coventry Ducati and see when they will be on sale!

flyingbanana
29-Sep-2006, 16:29
same bike more gaffer tape, powdercoated swing arm and frame, gold fork tubes, looks like some extra datalogging gear on the seat unit. might be the S version being track tested as the other pics show black forks, it may even have some more seat bodywork fitted that was missing from the close up pic on the road just behind the riders legs. it's from a series of pics that were in mcn, they didn't use this one if I recall. The other rider from those pics looks suspiciously like cappirossi....
