Hi i'm trying to fit a new starter motor to my 996 having drained all oil & water removed all the allen key bolts the casing will not move.Am I missing something.
its being held in place by the power of the magnet on the fly wheel.
have you not got the Haynes manual ?
you need to make up a plate with some bolts to draw it off the crank case
Yes there is a bolt that comes in from the other side if Im not mistaken. 4D
I think you may be mistaken :D
Yes I think I am, just checking the bible  4D
hmmm just checked what you said and I presume you are talking about the crank case cover.
you have to remove this to undo the 3 bolts holding the starter in situ

Yes that was what I was implying. You may need a puller to get the casing off. There is a bearing that attaches to the crankcase cover from the crankshaft and can be tight to pull of. 4D
You'll most certainly need a puller of some sorts as the magnets are pretty strong. There's also a bead of sealant holding it in place.
Have you removed the screw from behind the clutch slave cylinder? This one gets missed regularly and ends up with the cover cracking when you use a puller ;)

when ready to reassemble, remember to ensure the water pump impeller lines up with the drive pin too.
