For me it's been how long my site has been around, about eight years now which probably doesn't help you much!

to be at the top, you need your webiste to be the most relevant to the search topic and to be linked from as many other sites as possible. Your site needs to be "famous". It's a long process unfortunately.

I'm not sure it will bring you back the same amount of visitors...

Personaly I do not click on sponsored link because I know somebody is paying for me to see them, hence their relevance can be questionable.

There is a way you can get your new site to the top of the search engines, obviously google is the one to be favoured on.

I have no clue, I design and build the infrastructure behind it all to support the delivery of web services, business applications, online gaming, skiving and the overuse of msn messenger and web browsers in the workplace!

I just read that back, I truly am a geek!

Pretty much as Tonio said, the algorithm uses:

1) Number of sites linking to you

2) Intensity of searched for terms in the text of your site

3) How close to the top of each page the searched for terms are

4) Page Title

5) Meta data (description & keywords) hidden in the HTML

6) How many times your google'd link was clicked on when searched for

7) Many other lesser factors

Google change their algorithm regularly to stop people abusing the above to get up the search rankings, and therefore to make the paid-for search more attractive to fools like me! We spend thousands every week on search terms, but it's a reasonable investment.

Hope this helps,

Ali
