View Full Version : Stop press...it's official. Speculation is now dead on 1098
IT'S OFFICIAL!!! Can't upload any pics yet but the UK's MCN today 8th November (UK time 0545am when I bought my copy on my way into work) has the scoop!! 1098 is on their front cover (the "S" version) in all it's glory. Hope to scan in some of the pictures when I get home from work! Looks fabulous
nothing new on there website this morning
Cool...I'll go and get my MCN and have a gander, see if it's any different to their web site pics.
If it's true that they've got the scoop, what are you gonna do with your spare time now Rod ??? ;)

And to quote from MCN.
"999 Dialled out"
Ducati`s flagship superbike followed the 916form from 1993 until the interruption of the 999 in 2002. Now the classic look is back.
Ducati`s boss Claudio Dommenicali has had a poster of the original 916 on his office wall throughout the development of the 1098.
He is on the record as saying he wanted the 1098 to be a development of the 916 icon in the same way that porsche keeps reinventing the 911.
Tellingly, Ducati design boss Pierre Terblanche- The man behind the Multistrada, the sport classic range and the 999- claims to have had no input at all. (because the Multistrada, sports classic`s and 999 were well shite  )

What happened to the Milan secret unveilling then ???
Did Bologna bottle it with all the leaked photos ??

Did I miss something. I thought there were only five leaked shots yesterday, the two photos of the end cans and the two side shots plus the one of the headlight and fairing up close. I never saw any on here yesterday that show the bike from its right hand side or from the rear in it's entireity as in MCN this morning, or were the ones they have in the issue this morning leaked late last night??

biased i guess as a 999 owner, but when i saw the 999 i thought its a genuine move forward and i was happy to sell my 916 for one.
dont like the 'jap' front and it does seem to a bits of this bits of that. the rear end/cans in particular look terrible.
it will obviously be more powerful/quicker but for me at least that side of things is becoming less and less important. my 999 may 'only' have 147bhp but if i could use all that then i'd be in bsb anyway.

The nose looks like a modern take on the classic 916, twin lights with air intakes under them...
The way it should look...
Cant wait to see it in the flesh...
Are there any Ducati dealers around anymore? (No, thanks to the 999)
Oh well, I`ll have to go down to Metropolis in Vauxhall in a few weeks

Dont get me wrong, I`d be quite happy with a 999R Fila Rep.
But the 999 just is`nt the true successor to the 916, if anything is, its the MV F4.
But the 1098 is very nice and I cant wait to see one on the track in race trim...

160 at the wheel or at the crank?
160 at the crank is about 140 at the wheel - ok but nothing special.
160 at the wheel means 180 at the crank, which I just don't believe from a 1100 cc twin.

My 998R had 140'ish at the wheel in standard trim, surely they've moved on from there?!
Ducati made a bid deal of making some large performance gains, so I'd be surprised if these weren't 'at the wheel' figures.

It needs the extra bracing to reduce flex caused by 160bhp being fed to the rear wheel
That 160 needs to be along with a 15kgs weight loss to keeps up with a jap litre
160 bhp , gives what at wheel , 140ish so needs to be 180kg wet min to really compete that is if Ducati are trying to compete on the road
No mention of weight so far other than a quote somewhere saying " weight savings "cant remember where though
And 12 grand !!! "Are you having a laugh " that will be my order out the window no way am i paying that

Well what can I say?
The bike in MCN (if indeed it is the final version, I honestly don't know) is absolutely stunning.
To me this bike has addressed exactly what a huge number of customers have been asking for in spectacular style.
If you ingore the styling for a few moments, the power and performance figures are absolutely fantastic. I have also been told direct from the factory that the torque and power delivery from the new engine is truly jaw-dropping.
As to the styling, in my opinion, the bike pictured is a direct evolution of the iconic 916 style. The pictures in MCN are far more revealing in terms of angles and objective than anything we have been able to see so far.
If you take a picture of a 916 and put it next to the 1098 (as I have done for some time this morning) you can see the obvious transition from one design to the next.
I have also seen some suggestions that it is too Japanese. I can see how some may feel that considering the 999 was so unique. BUT if you cast your mind back to bikes of the mid 90s, slab sided with either round or square lights the "fox eyes" of the 916 were a very new approach and arguably some other manufacturers followed suit and developed them until what they are now. To me the 1098 is an evolution of that design. And it is VERY Ducati, those headlights are straight off of the Desmosedici - a lineage and relationship very few bikes will ever be able to hail as having.
The 999 is an awesome machine, both to look at and ride but we are all aware it hasn't quite stolen the hearts of the mass buying public. The factory have obviously been aware of that and have resolved those issues. If you read back to any of the original (or even latest) criticisms of the 999, every one has been addressed in this new design, bar none.
I'm really excited about this design, it's stunning from every angle. In the same breath i'm really sorry to see the 999 go as it is beautiful in its own right. I'm glad to know there are still fans of that design as it will help residuals and support that bike for many years to come.
Irrespective of the gorgeous looks, the power of a 1000cc inline 4, with the torque of a twin and the handling of a Ducati - I mean what else can we wish for?
Just my opinion

best laugh I've had all day, Van you do realise that Terbelanche actually did most of the work on the 916 don't you? and if you read any of Ducati's history you'll see that Tamborini did take most of the credit, and how could say the Supermono is ugly... you didn't but Terberlanche did design that too or did you forget that LOL!! I'd wait for proven weight and power figures and a review of the handling before I'd be that bold. The critics also reckon the 999 wasn't as iconic or beautiful as the 916. The 1098 is worse on that score - it won't be as iconic as it doesn't tread new ground and I'd say it was a fair bit uglier than a 916...

On your first point, I know Honda did it too. But the styling was better on the Ducati (personal opinion of course). All I said was that it was new approach, not specifically Ducati's new approach!:p However they did "rubber stamp" the look as such. After all they used it for nearly a decade. How long in comparison did the 'onda last?
On your second point, you're right, I should have clarified that statement. I was referring to looks only. BUT suffice to say after speaking to the factory directly - power, weight and especially torque will keep us all grinning.:)

Ahh, completely destructive and dismissive crticism - in your expert opinion!:)
As I said, just my opinion. In my position I have ridden all the Ducs you could shake a stick at and honestly love most of them. I'm just a big Duc fan! (surprisingly!!:) )
As a lot of folks know on this board I have a 749R at the mo' (after a string of other 74* and 99*'s) and have held onto that for the last three seasons because it's fantastic but on seeing the 1098 in MCN (the pics on the net are nowhere near as good or as clear) i'm thrilled to bits.
So cobblers? No.
I've heard all too often, opposition on the showroom floor from people about the looks of the 999 and how it should be more like the 916. Well thats what we've got. I thought I would back that up with my thoughts.

Only just a Monster owner but aint the bike just a 999 with a single sider and a different fairing Ducati have totally lost their way on this, as one who has always dreamt of owning a 999 but due to physical limitations has not been able to have one I feel that the forward thinking of the 999 has been destroyed by the die in the wood 916 brigade who would still have us wearing flares and afro hair styles. Obviously going to be one hell of a bike but definately a retrograde step in my opinion.
Ian
Well I like the way it looks from the pictures, but will reserve judgement until I see it in the metal. I won't be buying one mind since I don't see anyway of putting panniers on it................
As for other things stated, Mav has it right on the button, I remember reading something written by a 'ring instructor some years ago where he stated that for 70% of the 'ring you can't use more than 45bhp. He used to kick most people's butt using a 500cc Gilera Saturno which has 45bhp-at the crank-so about 37ish at the wheel. Now I have a Saturno and it is flat out at about 110 so it's not a fast bike-Power is Nothing without Control!

Really like the looks of it, I can't believe the hp claims tho. To compete with an IL4 litre bike they will need 165 at the rear wheel, maybe the R will have that but then spend £20k on a litre 4 and you would have more.
Playing a hp/performance game with the Japanese is a big mistake and they can only lose.
To spend £12k on a sportsbike I would have to have the best performance and this hasn't got it. If it was £8k I'd consider it as the looks are very nice even if they have styling cues from other bikes, the 916 was copied from the RC30 and NR750 and that didn't stop people buying it !
I like 750F1s, 851s, 888s, 916s, 996s, 998s and Monsters.
I don't like 999s, Multis, Sport Classics or (indeed) the 1098.
Is that ok?
Thanks.

That means you have not liked one design since 1993/4.

No I haven't, and it's not something I'm pleased or happy about. I have three (very) expensive Ducatis in my garage, two were made in 1992 and one in 2000. I only got into biking so I could ride Ducatis, I've never owned anything else (apart from a - very - brief episode with a TL1000S) and I'd rather give up riding than ride a Japanese bike.
So you could say I'm a big enthusiast, even though I'm sure it often doesn't sound like it.

Funnily enough it was the 749 that got me into riding.......funny old world innit?
