Getting a slipper clutch OUT, and a standard one IN?

I've got a slipper clutch on my 748 but I want to remove it and put the standard clutch back, until next summer anyway.

Will I just need to replace the pressure plate, springs and plates or does the basket have to come out as well?

What is different in the construction of a slipper clutch? What makes it slip?

The basket will probably have to come out as well.

The back-torque limiting device (to give it it's technical name) is built into the bottom of the centre hub and the back plate. When rear torque is applied, the two parts slide apart (either on plain ramps or a ramp and bearing action) and engage the clutch, limiting the power and thus removing the back torque.

The problem is that you'll need to take the hub parts off and to do this you need to take the centre nut off. Ever tried getting one off? It's a real arse to do as they're tightened up to 180Nm and as soon as you try to undo it ... it gives the same action as back torque and you engage the ramps which pops the clutch out and usually ends up popping the socket off, the skinning of knuckles and much swearing!

Take it to your local dealer as they'll have special tools to do it and it will take less than an hour. You shouldn't pay more than £40 and at least they'll set your standard clutch back up for you and you can always take it back if it doesn't feel right.

Just much less hassle all round!

Yes, Bungi is right. Slipper clutch have a longer spacer than a standard one, so you will have to take the clutch basket off.

Taking the basket out is no hassle - its only 6 bolts. Its getting the centre hub out that's the pain!
