Was wondering what you guys think the 848.. will be like? Pretty much exact replica of the 1098 with a little cube loss and power? Or you think it will be a bored/stroked 748cc motor?

If when tested at less than 1 billion feet altitude the 1098 delivers the kind of performance Ducati are indicating, (i.e faster in all situ's than a GSX'r 1000) do we anticipate the 848 to make the same advances over the 749 series?

What is the general opinion possibly even lighter than the 1098 ? power in the region of? (im guessing around 125 - 130) stomping mid range to put it on par with a GSX'r 750 in most ranges?

Im in love with the 1098 and so desperately want one, but not in a position to purchase one yet, however by the time i am the 848 may well be out and could be a worthy (slightly cheaper and more than adequate alternative?)

Discuss ;)

It will be a whole new engine like the 1098, but based on the previous generation tech'. I reckon it will have 749R type power i.e about 120bhp and 749R type engine geometry (which is also particularly oversquare).

I would like Ducati to go a bit further though and make it unique in its own right rather than it be seen as a smaller version of the 1098 which, is summat the 748 and 749 has always suffered from wrt the 916 and 999.

I'm tempted by a 1098, but on the roads I ride on it has far too much power and is unlikely to be particularly satisfying for me. A 748 is too fast, but conceivably I could consider an 848.

I'd be very surprised if it is not a mini-1098.

At the end of the day, Ducati is a relatively low volume manufacturer so it needs to get as much leverage as it can from bulk ordering through shared components - just look at the 916/748 and the 999/749 - especially when there is increased pressure for DMH to turn a profit.

They also need to target those that like the styling of the 1098 but are baulking at the price. Given the overwhelmingly positive praise heaped on the 1098 so far versus the so-so response to the 999 (not trying to put any bias on this but just look at the sales figures).

For Sure! Manufacturing costs are everything but also both series have always been part of the Superbike range.
