I remember reading about a mesh filter that is in addition to the normal oil filter. Could someone advise me where it is, and how I remove it for inspection. I seem to remember that its a good thing to inspect when looking for bits of chrome off the rockers? (not that I have a problem, just going to do an oil change)

Ok, its on the right side of the engine near the bottom of the casing, its a HUGE hex socket type affair, you cant miss it

Thanks DJTerra - Right side being foot brake side and the huge hex socket underneath the oil sight glass window?

Yep, good luck finding an allen key big enough - seems ducati decided to change the size for the testastretta models :(

Looks huge! Id be better off welding a 50p piece onto a piece of bar and using that. :(

Its 14mm and use a wrench with a long handle, it will snap free so watch your hands. Same goes for the inner oil mesh filter. That's a long mesh tubular type affair, again using same 14mm head.
After inspection and cleaning put the lot back together using a short arm wrench. Have heard of people applying too much torque and stripping alloy threads. Veeery expensive.....

Good luck.

ps this is on a 2001 996
