oil filter

Hi guys
wondering if anybody has any thoughts of how to get the oil filter undone, have tried the chain type wrench cant fit it in between the filter and the engine, so today bought the Ducati tool from P & H .
When i got home i tried the tool and it slips around on the filter , is this a common problem or have i got a bike previously owned by superman.
Do i need to get Another tool

The screwdriver and hammer method is usually the first thing i try! Always works unless the filter is sooo tight that it just rips it apart. If that happens then someone on here ha made a special took to get the bottom bit out.

The Ducati tool, and that type of tool in general are notoriously crap (sorry)
The screwdriver and hammer can be pretty effective if a little crude :o

I use a Sykes tool. A steel strap wrench type affair that is tightened up around the filter, bought from Halfords years ago. It has never let me down.
A conventional strap wrench is also effective.

Halfords do a filter removal tool that has a steel strap that wraps around the filter. Works great on dukes as it can get around the back of the filter and doesn't rip the filter apart.

The problem with using the hammer and screw driver is that if its tight the filter will rip apart leaving the top still screwed into the receased engine case and no way of getting it out! I know I've been there.

If you do destroy the filter there is someone on this board who had made a tool to get the bottom bit out. Sorry, cant remember who it is.

I know this might sound stupid but dont forget to try and unscrew it the right way - it can be difficult to work out which way to turn it when its upside down!

was just about to venture into the garage with a large screwdriver, but knowing my luck i will have the same luck as you Bryan i think i shall visit Halfords tomorrow then try the screwdriver if all else fails

the Bike is a "Yellow 748"
