OK so I need dragging out of the dark ages of using my box brownie. Looking to get myself a digital camera and wondered what any of you users might suggest/warn about.

I don't want anything too fancy, looking to spend up to 200 quid. Mostly for taking holiday pics etc but would be handy if it could do close up pics as well.

Would be useful if high res pictures can be taken but I'm aware these take up loads of storage space in the camera.

Needs to be fairly small so it can be taken on bike trips.

Sorry to sound vague but there are so many to choose from and it's always worth asking what others have found to be good value (or otherwise).

I'm looking to get one soon to, want to spend about £200-£300.

Casio are looking good at the moment, on a website called www.empiredirect.co.uk good prices or just to view specs.

I'm looking at the:-

Casio EX-Z3 £250
Casio EX-Z4 £300

These are both tiny almost credit card size and only 23mm thick, but still have an 3x optical zoom lense, digital zoom just tends to pixilate (make it more blurry)

Just great for carrying on the duke.

i have always gone for olympus cameras, the pro`s use em, so that speaks for itself.....:)

Paul, If there's one thing to worry about digital camera's it's the battery consumption. I would plug for a camera that runs on AA type battery's.Although this may limit you to a larger camera it will cost you dear in the long run,unless your camera has a internal recharchable battery, but because of its size they don't last to long and you can't quickly change these with out having to plug into a mains socket. Purchase a couple of sets of 2000mAh rechargable packs and a charger and you should be all right. Look for a camera with the max amount of Mega pixels for you money,a minimum of 3 Mega if you want to get a decent 10+8 print. On the smaller pocket type camera's you may limited to a smaller zoom capability but that depends on what you want to take with it. All the major brands nowadays are all much alike some may have a few more features and its worth looking at a web site that will show you some . Don't go down the road of Digtal/Electronic zooms often's the case you can't hold the smaller camera's steady enough to get a satifactory result especially us old boys :lol:
Most camera's are sold now with nothing else and its often that you pay more for simple excesories like a Camera case and lens cleaning cloth etc so you £200 squid suddenly ups to £250 and watch out for the "I would advise you Sir to take out the extra insurance cover that will only be another £30 , well worth it Sir" If you drop it, it can be covered by your house contents insurance . Hi Paul,

We use the Kodak DX3600 one at work, 3.2 mega pixels and does a great job.

It comes with a rechargable that gives adequate performance and with its own docking station, so just one button and your pictures are on your PC.

The other thing is if you buy from a shop haggle and try and get a 64 or 128 meg storage card, they'll discount it if you buy a camera as well.

Anyway now have an Olympus mu300 which is excellent.

I've always thought that the lens is the most important part of any camera so i would tend to go for one that is made by a well known camera manufacturer such as Olympus, Nikon, Canon etc. The tip about AA batteries is well worth noting. If your funny battery goes flat in some remove vilage you are stuck. If the camera runs on AA's then you can buy those almost anywhere.

Dont buy the memory card from Dixons etc, have a look at

As a general guide the camera can be bought from Dabs.com (a cheap online retailer) for about £198. The accessories, depending on where you get them, are about another £80 - £100 retail. So I think my price is pretty good!

If anyone else is interested in accessories I can get hold of pretty much most things, although I specialise in Fuji. For example, 512MB xD memory cards I'm offering for £120 inc delivery. I can also provide general photography items such as tripods, carry bags, scanners, rechargeable batteries etc.

I will stick up for you Dibble;)
We have a kodak 3600 at home, may be a bit big by todays standad but is a good alrounder, has internal plus flash memory, you can pull out the rchargeable batterys & stick in a couple of AA`s, & when you get home stick it in it`s dock & it downloads the pic`s, what more could you ak for.:D

I use Sony digitals as I can put the memory stick straight into my Vaio laptop
