In a couple of weeks time the ST is taking me off for a week in the general direction of the South of France / Northern Italy .
The itinerary is some what flexible ( we generally make it up as we go along! )
Does anyone out there have any pointers as to areas to visit / roads to take etc?
I'm hoping that some of the high passes may be open but not keeping my fingers crossed too hard.
Is there something similar to the F1 hotel chain in Italy ( clean / basic / dead cheep! ) ?
All suggestions welcome!
Cheers
Andy

I have a couple of maps that you can borrow. I have been down that way for the past four years and know some FANTASTIC routes.
When are you going?

Splendid- keep 'em coming......;)
Hmm, you might have trouble with snow on the quieter passes this time of year.
First time we went to Northern Italy we headed for Lake Lucern via Contrexeville down the eastern side of France. Then we headed through the alps via oberal, ferka and some other pass I forget the name of.
We stayed at the top end of lake Garda. This is 45mins north of Verona, but still in the hills.
I can't help you on the hotel front, as we stayed in hotels that had been prebooked. At a push though I could probably find out the names of the hotels (all were biker friendly).
We've done several trips now through the alps, but normally don't go before June time, and try to avoid the main routes to avoid the traffic. Trouble is this time of year those roads might not be the best to travel on.
Cheers,
John.
The Formulae 1 hotels seem limited to France (with the exception of one or two in southern Germany and Switzerland) - I haven't found an equivalent in Northern Italy.
If anyone does know of a similar hotel chain in Italy, I'm sure a number of people here would put it to good use !!

hi rushjob,
i travel down to monza every year for the superbikes races, i always stay in Garmish-Partenkirchen and ride over the alps on the small roads (fun on a missfiring duc because of the Altatude) over L71-B179 to Nassereith-imst-Landeck-Nauders-Zernez-St Moritz-Chiavenna-Lecco-Monza.
if put that into Autoroute itl it will make more sense.
i must admit there is nothing better than riding down off the mountains covered in snow into italy and stopping at the next cafe and watching the world go by.........
