View Full Version : Rear brake return spring fitting.

Help needed:

Is there any way to fit the rear brake return spring on a 916 without snapping the spring, maiming a digit or taking an eye out.

Do the return springs from a 748/916 differ from the later ones as I cannot see a logical way that it should fit?

I have already broken one and at £5+ it could be an expensive habit.

I'm sure that the correct way to fit it is to remove the assembly off the bike at the bracket, so that the rear brake lever is free to move further round.

This takes the tension off the spring when fitting, so it's easier to fit.

Once it's in place you can then rotate the brake lever round and align the plunger into the master cylinder (again I think having this loose helps to get the plunger in) and then tighten everything up.

Once the assembly is done, refit it back onto the bike with the two bolts through the bracket into the engine.

Interestingly, I think that the return spring was removed on later bikes!

It may be that it doesn't actually need one, so always worth checking the parts manual for that specific model/year to check if it had one.

Some of the parts will be the same, but that retaining pivot will have been replaced with an updated part and maybe a washer or two added!
