Is there anywhere that I can input my frame number/VIN No. that will let me know exactly what model my bike is.

On the V5 it just says Ducati, 996 cc.. Nothing in Model.

On my datatag it says 998s (that is totally wrong as it is definitely a 996).

and on the ducati warranty it says 996 S.

I am pretty sure that it isn't an S, but how do I tell?

but I can't remeber what the conclusion was. Something to do with calling ducati and refrencing the frame number, or there was an online refrence thingy. I think it stemmed form someone saying they had a certain spec, and someone replyed with ' it could have been added by the previous owner or been put on there by ducati as they had no standard parts blah blah. A 996s has a ohlins rear if i'm not mistaken. With a grey exhaust guard which probably got binned. See what I mean doesn't help does it :borg: do a search on the old boards:alien:

Anyone else any ideas?

I reckon if it's a 996S then it should definitely have an Ohlins rear shock. That should give you a pretty definite pointer. If it's got Showa then it's a Bip

The bike has got Showa front and Ohlins rear.

But all of the stickers just say 996. Do the 'S' models have 996s stikers?

The lower part of the fork leg, half covered by the side of the mudguard.
They'll either be Ti Nitride (gold coloured) or normal chrome plated.
Ducati UK should be able to tell you the specifics from the VIN number.
Either mail them or call them.

It might have helped if I'd spelt it correct.
Sorry:frog:

Call Ducati UK on (0845) 122 2996.

Quote them the frame number and they should be able to unequivocally tell you what it is, when it was imported, etc.

It's been a gripe of mine for a long time that the government show things like "Ducati Two Wheeled Motorcycle" on log books. It just gives free reign to unscrupulous types to allow them to pass-off one model as being another (not that I'm implying that's necessarily the case here).

Thanks for the phone number.

Phoned Ducati and they confirmed that everything was ok.
They didnt seem concerned that they had written the frame number down incorrectly in the warranty book either!!

Have phone DVLA and Datatag and everything is now sweet.

Luckily, I got what I paid for. 996Bip.

Phew..
