Change of clutch plates

My bike has covered nearly 10500 miles on the original clutch, and it is starting to make those groaning/squeaking noises when I pull away etc. When I put the new pressure plate on, I had a look at some of the plates and the friction pads seemed very low.

Is it just the case of buying a set of new clutch plates for the 996 Bip and slotting them in? Or is it a little more involved than that?

The clutch pack has to be a certain thickness for the clutch to engage properly

So, all 996 Bip clutch packs are the same height then? Damn, was hoping I could phone Ducati and they would just send me out a new pack..

Cool, that is what I was hoping the answer would be.

I've got a Haynes manual, so that should let me know the order of the plates.

You do need to look at the condition of the Basket as well as replacing plates. Yours may be alright but if there are ridges along the working surface of the basket slots then that needs to be considered.
The slots on the centre drum might also be worn but its less likely

Have you taken the plates out recently and cleaned them? The groaning noise sounds more like a build up of clutch dust than worn out plates, unless you're actually getting clutch slip in which case I'll shut up and go back to the SS room.

just to repeat what mr fish says

mine clutch started groaning at about 9K. pulled it to bits blew out the dust (carefull not to get a lung full) now at 12k still seems ok.

Well, I took a few plates out and had a look. Was a bit concerned about pulling them all out.. Maybe I will try that and see if it makes a difference.

Although, I did notice the clutch slip when trying to do a burnout.. That is what made me think that it might be coming to the end of its life
