is it just me or do the clocks look a little 'iffy' on the milage reading? by iff i mean on eery bike ive owned the numbers have 99.9% of the time the numbers have all lined up, those look a little up+down for my liking.

Tell me more.....
disks are wrong, they are standard ones on it, should be cast iron full floaters on the sps.

Do my eyes deceive me or is that a passenger peg hanger mount I can see, yep just checked the other pick
65mm calipers were they on the 97 SPS
yep, you are right there kev, i rekon its a bp, i'd want engine/frame numbers and check with dukuk.
Tell me more.....
here's a pic.
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f254/zhed44/Ducsitsideoncrop213.jpg
- 1998 748 BP
- 16,000 miles
- carbon fibre top and side fairings
- standard BP seat fitted with a single-seat cowl (painted with white numberboards)
- dark smoke double-bubble screen
- 45mm cored cans with a JHP open pipe chip
- stainless steel braided brake and clutch hoses
- recent clutch slave cylinder piston and seals
- recent tzubaki chain + renthal sprockets (+ 2 teeth on the rear)
- recent rear sprocket cush drive bushes
- recent michelin pilot power tyres
- recent clutch centre
- new throttle position sensor
- new battery
- new starter solenoid
- new ride height adjuster
- new clutch plates
- new front brake pads
- new OS front brake disc
- new rear brake master cylinder
- FSH (including documentary proof of the rockers checked and given a clean bill of health at 12,000 miles)
it was dropped on its OS at very low speed during a u-turn so the top fairing has a small crack and the OS fairing has a very slight graze
hence, £2000.
i'm only selling it because i recently bought a 996S
PM me if you're interested

Couple of points;
1) SPS was only introduced in 98
2)decals/clocks are not correct for 97SP
3) 96/97 748 was an SP imported by Moto Cinelli and had KPH clocks
4) Slipper clutch was not standard
Buyer beware, looks like rollock's to me
sps was officially 98, but mine is a 97, so are a few more i know of.

Keep the observations coming, I've emailed and asked the guy, but know little about Duke's at the mo. I'm after an SP or above, with the adjustable headstock, for racing in Thunderbikes. Cheers
Should be on 40mm caliper mounts. So that's new forks on it then ;) Defo a BP subframe. Didn't the sps get a plaque on the top yoke to?
Just doesn't look right????? reckon that may be a fibreglass fairing to??
Ducati cans, for the 748 at least, didn't have removable baffles either.

the 65mm caliper mounts will make it easy to upgrade to 4 pad calipers, and if its for a race project ther authenticity isnt so important IMO but you wil need to try and establish the engine spec and condition.
why not buy a salvage bike and perhaps even source a decent engine, kinda build your own.

I think "For a first Duke" there's nothing wrong with it. A good starting point to get to grips with the whole twin riding experence.. Then if you like it? get a proper one. If not sell it and get your money back. Just my two pence worth!!
Nope, 65mm caliper mounts were correct on the sps, 40mm on the sp.
748sps didnt get a plaque either.

I also emailed him for the engine and frame numbers, becuase ducati-uk will tell you straight away what it is.
no reply from him as yet, looks like one to avoid to be honest.

I stand corrected :) The brakes do appear to be right. I'm showing the SPS as a 1998 and 1999 bike. No 1997 either??

All the 748's had adjustable steering angle up to '99.

the sps was 98-99, but were released late 97, mine is a late 97 bike.

So is there any difference in the early frames between the basic and top of range bikes?

As far as I know its only the 748E (Economy) that didn't have the adjustable headstock, otherwise a early BP is the same as the SP or SPS and my 748S, the 748R was different with the dropped tube frame brace to allow a bigger airbox and also came with 12mm engine mounts as opposed to the 10mm mounts on the other 748s
kev, the sps does have a diff frame from the BP/SP,in that it uses the lighter 25CrMo4 material which wasnt used on earlier 748's, but was also used on the 916sps.
the 748sps and 916sps have more in common than you may think...
nope it cant be an sps, its first registered 23may 97, thats to early for the 748sps.
may be an sp, but i doubt it very much.
as him for details and numbers, but doesnt want to disclose them, says it all really.
leave it alone frankly.

Robin is SPS using bigger diameter and thinner wall frame rails like my 748RS frame, soon found that out when I tried fitting my 916 crash bungs to it.

748dukes are great bikes. I have one but when the leathers come on it's usually either the 999 or 916 that comes out of the garage. The poor girl has only done 340 miles this year..
