That's cheap. They're over £290 new now. I sold a hard wired one on ebay for £205.

The battery in these transponders must have a finite life. They are not user changeable as everything is potted into the casing. So.......... one may invest in a secondhand transponder but how much life is left in that battery.

I'm only thinking aloud here, interested to hear your thoughts.

Easy way to check. When it's fully charged take it out of the holder and the green light will flash. The number of flashes is supposed to be the number of days charge left in the battery. From new they flash 5 times, or 5 days charge. As they get older they lose some of the charge capacity and will not give as many flashes on a full charge. I wouldn't buy a used one that has 3 flashes or less. The key to longer battery life is to charge and discharge them regularly. I bet most are put away at the end of a season and left until the start of the next one.
