Monster Engine History

I'm currently looking to buy a Monster (around 900cc) and a pal has advised me to look for a 2 valve twin spark air cooled model. The recent S2R model fits the bill, but is outside my budget. Are there any earlier models that were also fitted with the 2 valve twin spark motor. Thanks.

The M1000 DS would have come out earlier maybe 2003 so should be cheaper
