Buying Advice ?

Hi All

I am looking at a 900 supersport 1994 with 20,000 miles. The bike has FSH, new clutch, and appears to be in good order. I am off to test ride the bike on Monday.

Any advice regarding this model?

Don't worry, the one I was going to darlington to look at was a silver FE, but the bugger sold it out from under me.

Having spent the last few months looking (and then buying) I'd say the one you're talking about is worth about £2.4k. There are loads around if you look carefully. A well taken care of 20k miler is a much better bet that a tatty 5k miler, as I discovered after spending £60 getting to a dealer with a 'mint' '97 SS (still for sale on autotrader). Mint my arse.

Also, take time to think what mods you'll be doing to her later. A set of termis, goodridge, a full service and new diablos would cost you £1.3k, so if it has all of the above it's going to save you in the long run. That yellow SS looks lovely, and I doubt it'll atract many bidders at that price. He'll probably take £2.5k as the twin headlamp conversion isn't that popular.

There's one on autotrader for £2,095 with an ohlins rear (seems to be up your way), and another for £2,495 (in liverpool I think). They'll be more in a couple of weeks.

Your valuation is spot on. The bike I am looking at is priced at £2395, Completely standard as far I can tell. Its for sale at a small independant Bike shop( remember those lol) The shop owner has owned an SS superlight and two 916s himself and appears very knowledgable about the brand. He also looks after my other bikes so I'm assuming he will do me a reasonable deal and has a good record of after sales service in the area.

I am pleased to say I did the deal today and pick up the bike on Wednesday. I am planing to join the club and have already become a regular visitor to the board.

I had a good test ride and the bike exceeding my expectations. The biggest concern I had was comfort. Although I am not intenting to do great distances it needed to feel "right".
I lost my right leg below the knee in 1995 and wear an artifical leg, this means I have limited flexibility in the knee, a sports bike type riding position can be painful. My other bikes BMW1150GS, KTM duke 2 and Harley all have an upright riding position so I was concerned about the SS. However my fears where unfounded and the SS fitted perfectly.

My first impressions of the SS are differcult to put into words but the appeal is a "pure" and the design simple, no water cooling, no fuel injection just good honest engineering put together in a beautiful form. Riding the SS feels like something to be mastered and learnt over time, this is not a bike you get bored with after 6 months.

I am looking forward to Wednesday and starting my SS experiance

Many congrats. I hope you'll both be very happy together. This may be a good time to explain to your wife/girlfriend that she may not be seeing quite so much of you, or your disposable income, in the future....:)

Funnily enought the only two other bikes I considered before buying the SL were an 1150GS and a Duke II. Do you ever use the ukgser message board?

Yes I browse the GS board most days under the same screen name.

The KTM was great when I lived in Devon but I am now in the Highlands of Scotland where the roads are more open it sometimes runs out of puff. If I get addicted to Ducati I can see myself changing the KTM for a Multistrada in a year or so.

Hi Stumpy,

Just noticed that you replied to a GS post of mine about buying a 1100 or 1150 a few months back. The web's a small world...

I was seriously tempted by a GS after spending some time blatting around on Themla with Tiff Coates down in Brazil. Unfortuately I tried a 1200 GS first so the 1100 felt a bit lardy after that.:)

I've also (re)discovered that I really, truly love Ducatis. Sad, but true.
