Dodgy LCD speedo

I've just bought a 2003 Multistrada, and the lcd display is faulty. A load of the pixels don't show, but otherwise it works fine. Is there anything that can be done to save the display, or is it scrap now? I dare say a new one will be prohibitively expensive, and I've not seen a secondhand one for sale yet, so I'm hoping it's salvageable. Any advice welcome.

I've seen quite a bit on this, apparently its because the reset buttons are pressed too hard :puzzled:

I've been scouring the internets and can find nothing. Maybe I should look at an aftermarket setup, there are some pretty flash units available for small money these days, though I bet they're a pig to wire up.

why bother? maybe look out for a 2nd hand replacement but other than at night its not an issue

I can't read the speedo very well during the day (I've only just got the bike, so not ridden it at night), and the mileometer is totally unreadable, which I suspect is an mot issue.

Be careful with replacement units as the clocks are coded to the keys and in turn the ECU is normally coded to the clocks. So fitting a second hand set is likely to cause you more problems

Ah. It would appear there's also no backlight, so it's unreadable in the dark.

I've just found it; Scorpio Electronics, cheers. I've emailed them. The other option as I've said would be replacing it with an aftermarket unit, but would removing the unit cause any problems with the coded ignition?

Yes
As the Clocks decode the transponder in the Key and then send a signal to the ECU, replacing the dash with a after market unit would immobilise the bike
There are ways around this such as having the ECU reprogrammed so that it doesn't look for a code, not sure how much they charge for this service. i'm sure Mark at BSD could give you a quote.

Replacing the complete set isn't cheap, think there are some clocks, ECU and Keys on ebay for around £500
Be better if you can get yours repaired

Scorpio can remove the coding from 749/999 clocks and reset the odometer to zero for £75 plus p&p. They may be able to do the same for the MS clocks.

That sounds interesting. Locksets for £500 is way out of my league, but if I can get someone to part with just the clocks (from maybe a crashed bike) it should go for much less. Might be a long wait, though.
