Number Plate Size I am going to get rid of my big standard number plate on the 749. Already got the tidy. I don't want to go too small so that I am always pulled but at the same time want something smaller and tidier. What is the consensus of size that would be appropriate? Thanks in advance:bouncy: |
I've just bought a 7x5 inch jobbie, which is probably bang on with the tail tidy, nice clear lettering etc |

agree that 7x5 is the way to go. i had a 2x7 one liner on mine but got pulled so will revert to the 'sqaure' type from now on. |

saw your location, and strongly advise you to keep it as near as possible to required size - particularly if riding out at w/ends in the Surrey/Sussex areas:o The boys in blue get a bit 'trigger-happy' with numberplates & cans on a sunny Sunday...... Iffy plate leads onto all sorts of things...... That said - see you at one of the meets sometime? C :) |

Thanks C, going to go for the 7x5 as I don't want to attract attention to myself. Was going to try and find the Black Swan last Sunday but had a bit of a bad day / night Saturday and was in no fit state to drive anything. Work and weather allowing I will try to do as many DScmeets etc as possible. |
Mine is 5x7 on my 748. I think it looks good and doesn't seem to attract too much unwanted attention. Ade. |
7x5 for me as well only stoped once for it ;) |
I have a 7x5 carbon plate on my 749. That is the width of the bracket I got. http://www.casoli.co.uk/products/casolijh.htm We were stopped in a Sunday "safety check" by Thames Valley police. My mate was nicked for a 2inch hight plate and another for race cans. They looked at my plate and let it go. There is a specification for plates that includes not only character hight, but also the font used, the sapcing, the yelloq border width and (beleive it or not) it is also a legal requirement to have the dealer name across the bottom of it. Obviosuly it depens on whether they are keen enough though (revenue collection might be down that day!) :biaggi: I don't use that plate now as it broke at the mounting holes - took someone on the pillion, and going over a bumby bit of road the suspension grounded catching the plate on the tyre which dragged it round and also the exhaust mountings damaged the carbon hugger. Dealer said to increase compression damping half turn and that felt better the next time! Henry |
Cheers Henry I had heard the bit about the dealer name on the bottom etc but surely that is only from new. If the car plate breaks you don't go back to the dealer that could be miles away you go to Halfrauds or the like?? |
My plate just has the name of my bike on it - Flash!! As in Flash Gordon. I'll get me coat. |

Or your cape?:D:D:D |
Ha ha! I'll get hold of that Ming's daughter girl that's for sure.... |
I've got a 7x5 on an Evoluzione relocator, and had the same size on my old RSV. Never been pulled, and it looks OK too. I'd say it was the size to go for. |

Which would be nice:D:D:D |
How about a 7x5 bendy plate? That would have prevented my trouble with breaking, and maybe if it flaps about in the wind enough a speed camera might not be able to focus on it ... (but don;t count on that!) http://www.malplates.co.uk/showbike.html Henry |
Hell, that took some finding again! http://www.autoreg.net/ I had a 7x5 carbon plate from them, which was quite a think chunk of carbon. You get the carbon showing through the numbers and around the edge (the yellow covering is just cut away to reveal what is underneath it). (hope that wasn't stating the obvious) Henry |
I have a 10x3 (Plate that is) Looks slightly more legal that the 7x2's I've not been stopped for it yet, Only coz they cant catch me !!! |
...Talking about plates and being new in the country and in the message board... my plate is so huge that is impossible not to be seen even from a blind cop.. and I am worry about cameras too as out of the dealear with a brand new 999 on the M40 between snow and rain, at less than the 4000 rev suggested fro the first 600 miles I was easy over the limits... I saw on MCM ...GHOST PLATES... illegal but they look like the real ones and ..antiflash! Anyone knows anything about it?? |
This has been discussed on another thread jsut in th past few days, and the concensus was that they are a waste of money (as well as being illegal). In some cases, the plates might even draw attention to you. FOr example, there is a "prism" type of plate that claims that the number is invisible when viewed from an angle as a gatso would. Even if it did work, and there is some doubt of that because the angle of view of the camera is wrong for it, if a police car passed you and glanced at your plate (as they do) it would attract attention by dipping in and out of view as he passed. You would most likely get stopped for having the illegal plate then. There is more on cameras, detectors (worth a look at those) and the dodgy plates here http://www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/camerashy.htm It is quite interesting reading about the other tests they have done on cameras, guns and the detection equipment that you can buy. the legal requirement is to have the vendor of the number plates company name on it - this has been in effect from January 2003. eg, buy a replacement plate from halfrauds, and you have to have the 'Halfrauds' name on the, likewise from any other place you get a replacement done at. so, anyone with a Jan 03 bike/car onwards (the latter part of the '52 plates) MUST have a plate makers name on it, whether 'DucatiCentral' or other. Lots of rather 'well trained' traffic police in our area are picking up on this now, so do be careful if you have a newish vehicle/bike & change the plate - its a good starting point for the boys in blue. Henry, dropped autoreg an email last night about a carbon plate, but sadly they have sopped making them! |
What is the law on indicators? Suppose I will have to get a bigger plate this year |

Damn! And I was going to get a replacement one. Mine has the two top corners ripped off when it got caught on the wheel. The trouble with that Evolutione plate relocator is that the bit that holds the plate bracket is somewhat flimsy. Mine has been bent back into place after getting caught so many times I am wondering when it will work harden and break. THEN I'll be in trouble because the plate will just fall off somewhere on the road. What I liked about the 7" wide plate was that it was the same width as the rear of the bike (on 749), so it looked really neat from behind. The std plate sticks way out. But you knew that! :smug: Henry |

This actually came in to effect from September 2001 so from 51 reg onwards plates should comply with these regs..... Click here......... Hope this helps Andy ;) |
Does that mean I can comply with the law by putting my own name on it then if I made it myself (or had it made ... I could SAY I made it myself)? In reality, as I now have a Termi exhaust and make lots of noise, and also have a dark visor, I would not want to draw any more attention to myself than necessary with a small plate. Just asking for trouble. Henry |
No...there is a register of authorised plate manufacturers and producers and the name and postcode on the plate must be one of those companies otherwise the plate will not conform to the regs. Of course, that would have to be checked up on if you got stopped but you have to ask whether it's worth the potential hassle. |
Quote:
I couldn't see where the regs said it should have the name of the manufacturer in plain visible sight on the same side as the numbers, so there could be the smallest of loopholes there where you could have the name of the manufacturer on the dark side of the plate!?!? |
