Where can I get a good quality t/day kit Well I have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for Barry to sort me a kit for my 999, it's been 6 weeks now, and everytime I have called it'll be next week, not done it yet, will be next week, been busy this week, it'll be next week... you get the picture. I wouldn't mind but I got him the kit to mould in the first place :flame: So decided that enough is enough, nice guy, top quality gear, but false promises and not delivering the goods when expected more than once, I need a kit before the end of the month, so who's got one, what's the quality like, cost and how soon can I get it? :Rant over: |
I did some digging a while back and the best kit I could find was the DP aviofibre stuff. Not cheap, but it looked like the least hassle option. DM had some in stock a while back, (the road based kit i.e. with light holes), and they may still have it? If not, you could try ordering one or seeing if another dealer has some in stock. |
JPM, u2u on the way ..... |
I'm looking for the same thing |
i have a set sitting in my garage, road side panels race front (no light holes etc) that i have yet to fit to my 999. got it from australia as looked the best kit i could find. not cheap at all but looks good quality and has carbon inlaid in it too. not really looking to sell but the fact that desmodue is using up alot of my time and money and the fact i havnt got round to putting it on yet, i could be tempted to part with it. wouldnt be looking to make any profit from it. and wouldn't expect to get import tax etc back. as i said it wasnt cheap, 600+ i think but u2u if any interest. |

call me then .... |
By t/day kit you guys mean racing fairings, right? |

yep |

Ok thanks. |

sorry, hope that didn't appear blunt mate, i'm just running round multi tasking and failing miserably in my own inimitable style ..... |

Sure, no problem. |
Got a few numbers to call now, will let you know how this progresses, it's hard to believe there are so few kits around for these bikes, if I had any knowledge on the subject I'd be kicking kits out myself, there's a large pot of gold there for someone |
Quote:
Hmmm..... can someone post links here to sites of companys that make those kits, so we can check it and compare prices? |

Ok, i'll start. http://www.cruciata.com/scheda_eng.a...dModello =333 Do a search and check other models/years. |
Race Products- so long as you dont mind some cutting and shunting on the belly pan to make it fit. £200 ish, and takes a week or so if you ask nicely. http://www.raceproducts.co.uk/ |
Henry, I've ordered the seat unit a week or two ago from them, called them earlier, just done today so should have that hopefully by the weekend. I am tempted to buy the rest of the kit off them, although I do need, like you to get it painted, although I have that sorted it's still more money. I have had a chat with Vimori today, who can colour pregnate the glass fibre to any colour, kawasaki green anyone? but it's going to cost around 335 quid just for the front end, what I need to do is figure out how much it's going to cost to paint, and weigh up the options. Guess you had to hack the belly pan for the sidestand ??? Is it a good quality kit Henry? |
Yeah the quality seems good. I cut a section away for the sidestand and also had to cut a slot for the front pipe under the engine. I'm down in Swindon at moment working, but I'll take some pics when I get back. It'd be a hassle if you wanted to race with it because you'd need to glass up the holes but for track days I find it's alright. I can detail exactly what needs doing on the belly pan. The nose just about fits over the leight unit too ... so it takes me now 40 minutes to swap from track to road or back which is swapping fairing, seat unit, removing rear light unti/plate and rear footpegs/tax disk. Acceptable I reckon. Oh, on the subject of painting .. I will get aroudn to it, but I will do it myself. £38 for 1/2 litre pack from RS Bikepaint and a mat'es compressor. Need thinners, etch primer etc but better than the £350 I got quoted! Pictures of fairing on my site here http://82.70.86.166/handk/bikes/inde...ll20050325.php doh! server is well an truly down .. in fact it is in Swindon here with me! Just realised! [Edited on 21-4-2005 by HW] |
Well I won't be racing it, so not fussed about the holes, I really need one with a sidestand cutout, but as you've done would be fine, saves a lot of hassle at the end of the day, be interesting to see the photo's, and also one of the sidestand "mod" |
Yep .... will take some pics tonight or in the morning. Sidestand cutout was the easy bit. [Edited on 21-4-2005 by HW] |
Might be a stupid question but... Is good quality an issue for trackday kit? Wouldn't you want something that fiited OK but is as cheap as you can get away with? They don't do T/D kit for ST's, fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) I've got a collection of scabby old panels that I have already crashed in. I don't really care how scabby they look though if I'm just gonna crash em again |
I see your point .... but it depends on how you define "quality". I replied that the RP kt was good quality because it is quite thick fibreglass although I don't doubt it would disappear in a nanosecond if I went down on the track ... but for knocks and scrapes getting into vans/trailers etc it will protect. It also fits well once the belly pan hassle is solved so it's quick and easy to change it over. Only remaining hassle is it's white, but I can even get used to that. If I decide on stickers for it then I might paint it. Not fussed at moment though. |
Jools, I've used various kits over the years, to be fair most have been great, but you can get the odd duff kit, Barry the guy who I had used for some time, and freely promoted upon the DSC does great quality kit, thicker where it needs to be, lighter where it doesn't, even adds thicker patches to more crash exposed areas, and sitting down with him you can discuss ideas, changes he could make to make the kit better, stronger, more practical, his only downfall is his turn around time and not being able to say exactly when you would expect your kit. I can order one today from someone else and get it within 10-14 days, or as I have been 6 weeks plus with still no eta. I've seen some kits which are so thin you can actually see light through the panels, and the slightest knock it new kit time, so you pays your money you takes your chance I guess |
Henry, Did you snap those photos last night? |
Jools With regard to it just being track day kit... yes it is but there are quite a few of us now i think that run the bikes in track day kit all the time. We do enough track days and the bodywork is so bloody expensive that it just makes life easier to keep it in that trim. I have had my track bodywork painted so the bike looks decent even when out on the road :) |

Too tired to start with that last night .... just getting server and PCs back on line here now and wil do it in a bit. |
Cheers Henry, no rush as such, have a cup of tea and a biccie! |
have you guys tried Armstrong Engineering in Newcastle ?? good quality race fairings you can get them on 0191 2614579. cheers Neil |

Done the tea and biccie thing now ... here's the pictures Race Products belly pan modified so it now fits. Still needs the resin cleaning up, the gaps filling and painting but as it is (mostly) all underneath you don't notice it anyway. Large rectangular cutout needed first to allow room for front pipe. That now pokes through by a couple cm. Then the slot needed to be cut to allow it to fit around the battery holder. I then bridged the gap with a piece of the cutout fibreglass and screwed it on with self tappers. THen used wire mesh and glass matting with resin to strengthen on the inside (see next pics) [Edited on 22-4-2005 by HW] |
(previous post edited too) |
rear section of belly pan - could have been left with no glassing really as the upright biot at the back was still attached as a pivot point |
Nosecone with Powerbronze airflow screen fitted. Rather nice I thought. Just heard about a chap in Grantham who imports classic Dukes and also does paint spraying. Might go and find him this afternoon to see how much he'd charge for a red paintjob! |
So .... pretty ugly isn't it? I've heard it said that none of them really fit very well, but I have no idea whether that was "bah humbug" or what? I reckon you pays your money and takes your choice. The Race Products kit was the right price, apart from being unpainted. It looks alright though (see Avatar). Fairing including nosecone was about £200 (just over), seat was £80 and front mudguard that I did not use was £40 (couldn't get the original out with the wheel in, so left it). I used the stock seat pad as I have a Sargent seat for road use, and I just got the seat pad thingy from Italia for £12-50. |
For the money I guess it's a good deal, but you shouldn't of had to hack away at the belly pan or at least not to that extent... Hmmmm decisions decisions. I can get a kit in black (pre-preg) for £325 cash (no seat unit) or get this for £200 or so and then have to butcher the bellypan and then get it painted My head hurts |
Quote:
Frankly, I'd go for the £325 deal. This seemed like a good option at the time, and time was something I had little of. I had booked my first track day with 4 weeks notice and only then thought about how I was going to prepare the bike. RP make the fairings to order and supplied within 2 weeks. They were very apologetic about the belly pan problems and have sent me a new one (with the sides left longer as they thought that might help - it won't). I only found out the other hassles about the battery carrier after that conversatio with them. Normally I woudl have hit the roof over this as it clearly does not fit the bike it is intended for. They only thing they could have done was a refund and then I would not have had a fairing for my first outing. Hence the "cut and shunt and live with it" approach. My head hurt for the following couple of weeks too whilst I got up the courage to put and angle grinder to it. Useful tool that ... I was still hacking away 2 days before the track day, hence "no paint" :) |
based on how much hacking we have already done for your bodywork i reckon paying a bit extra is worth it and also means that its coloured ready so no hassle getting it painted up etc. |
Henry I assume the seat unit fitted OK, all apart from being a mono not Bp etc? |
Yep that fitted fine. All the holes line up ... :) Doesn't quite cover the bip subframe loop but I'll live with that. |

I get car paint from several sources - a local car bodyshop suppliers in Hemel, but try www.paints4u.com - you'll need single pack paint, respective thinners and lacquer should come to about 30 quid all in, add another 18 if you need primer and thinners (different from the paints thinners) Don't know what 'magical paint' you're getting, but 38 squidleys is rather a lot for 1/2 a litre, unless you're going down the colour-shifting paint route Hope it helps Jas |
Quote:
I must admit that is for colour matched (the tank and mudguard are still original parts) - from RS Bikepaint. It's a 2 part pack. I've just been trying to track down this chap in town who is a Ducati single enthusiast and bodywork resprayer. Sounds like a useful bloke to meet! |

QB carbon fibreglass bodywork can be colour impregnated. http://www.worldofqbcarbon.com/produ...99products.htm I've not got their kit, so can't say how easy it is to fit but it might be worth giving them a call. |
