Shock Removal - help !

Still having a shocker (groan) getting the std showa unit out.

Now got the top bolt undone, and the bikes balanced niclely on some axle stands, but the bottom one doesnt want to know...is that some sort of collar on the other end..am I right in assuming its juts an 8mm bolt that needs undoing ? :puzzled:

At the moment im just trying an allen key with an extenion tube and lashings of WD40. I suppose next step is plusgas and an 8mm allen socket ?

Any advice appreciated !!

give the WD some time to work.
the bolt goes through and attaches to the nut on the other side which has a flat piece on it that locks onto the swing arm.
get a ratchet on it but make sure it doesn't start to turn at the other end.
pretty much what you already know

if you are not in great need of you allen key you could cut it and put a socket on it.
otherwise I can send you one tomorrow ?

aka.eric 20-Nov-2005 16:22

Heat-do you have a hot air gun?.Often enough to free the buggers.

Duke2BSteve 20-Nov-2005 17:55

Also try and tighten more, that sometimes frees it up to loosen, some nuts/bolts actually tighten in the opposite direction to normal (just a suggestion!!) I've got the mother of all socket sets, and tons of allen keys if your interested, am only round the corner...

Nat I have a blow torch (the one for welding copper pipes) and some OK allen keys (they got my tight nuts off, ohh err).

I'm just up the road and could possible get down tomorrow lunch time, I need to see duke2bsteve anyhow.

Steve glad to see you got rid of that mythical horse;)

Halfords.....Professional..........:lol::lol::lol:

skidlids 20-Nov-2005 21:00

I have a few Allen keys around where I have chopped off the shorter bit to just leave the longer bit, The 8mm and 10mm ones go straight into the appropriate sockets and then fit onto the airgun. Originally made them up for removing the damper rod bolts when taking forks apart. But work well on stuborn chassis bolts.

888heaven 20-Nov-2005 21:30

Natty
is it the same configuration as the T8 if it is you will need to lock off the nut on the other side with a socket and T-bar wedged against the swinging arm then get a air/hammer gun and industrial quality sockets I think machine mart do a quality set.
when you replace the bolt I can send you a S/S one if you give me the dim.

I had trouble getting the bottom bolt out on my 748 a couple of years ago.

The problem is that the bolt head on LHS corrodes into swinging arm bore.

I had to carefully drill the head off (without damaging s/arm) and also the flat edged bush on RHS.
Once both ends of bolt were drilled off I then had to drift the remains of the bolt out.

If you have snapped an 8mm socket drive allen key then I rekon your bolt is corroded into the bore.

It's that dissimilar metal situation again - it's a b*gger!

Natty,

Sorry mate was actually at work for once!!!!

Give us a ring on 07811280214 anytime mate, got a couple of bits from Dave996 as well which might help..

Steve

dave996 22-Nov-2005 22:03

Nat is it off yet?

Duke2BSteve 22-Nov-2005 22:22

Dave, not heard from Nat yet?

Nattyboy 26-Nov-2005 10:11

Update - Steve came round with all the tools/blow torch. Result;

- ANOTHER busted Halfords Hex socket (im not joking!!)
- Rounded out bolt head
- ABout an hour of drilling the bolt out (after removing the pipes/balance pipe etc

And it STILL hasnt fecking come out :o

Steves popping round this morning to see if we can finish the job - what a top man (at least 'er indoors kept us fed and watered eh mate ??!!)

Incidentally..the captive nut at the end (which I assume is sleeved through he swingarm)..how far back is the 'collar' that threads through the swingarm...? From Rickys note looks like we might have to drill out bothe sides. Stupid question, but theres no thread to damage inside the swingarm castings is there ??

All going well..I will have a nice shiny new Ohlins on the bike later !!

Ah well..look on the bright side..at least I managed to flog Dave a carbon tank cap when he rang to see how it was going...

keefer 26-Nov-2005 11:40

don't you just love bikes that have been used in all weathers :o

skidlids 26-Nov-2005 11:58

Nat the sleeve on the threaded collar is only about 12 to 15mm long.
I would attack it from the chain side, drill the top of the allen bolt off by working up to a 10.2mm drill. Then it's a matter of drifting the whole lot out.
Trouble is the steel bolt passes through four tight fitting collars, two on the ride height rose joint and two on the shock. Lost and lots of release agent required.

Nattyboy 26-Nov-2005 14:54

Thats it..Steves just left and weve given up...the bolt head on the laft side was so hard the drills were glowing !!! Whole things been a chuffing nightmare and 2 days wasted...

So its on the trailer and off to Louigis (where no doubt he'll have the old shock off and the new one in in 5 minutes flat!!!). Not the end of the worls as it needs a bit of welding done on the headstock to restrict the steering lock after I fitted the large capacity air tubes (dont fancy busted fingers if it gets in a wobble!!)

Thanks again for everyones advice..

Nat

Duke2BSteve 26-Nov-2005 23:00

Well don't like to admit defeat, but Nat that bolt wasn't going anywhere, that was more stuborn than the missus!!

Well at least I know how to strip the back end now!:o Don't think there's any danger of becoming the next BSB Airwaves mechanic :lol:

I reckon the next time there's a problem, we meet in the pub 1st for several Cans, (Jerry Cans!!!).... Speak to ya later mate, good luck with the new shock, i'm off to fit me spanking fuel cap......:burn:
