Ducati engine mods. What have you done? Hi peeps, i am interested in what sort of engine work that people have had done to their Ducatis. I might be a muppet here and be missing the point but i do not see that many topics on engine work. What i want to know is............what lurks under the fairing panels. is it that most owners are happy with what they have. Or is it that we are all really secret tweakers?!!!!! It might be that owners only want offical ducati mods??? I do not know. Bit of a silly post i know but only a bit of fun. I am just interested in what mods have been done. from an enthusiast point of view.:D;) |
748: 853 kit 50mm termis fim chip jhp filter big bore air scoops |
50mm Termis Lightened Flywheel FIM Chip You'll find a few here that have been fettled further usually by people like JHP or Sigma with getting their cams dialled in and various internal bits lightened ... |
Don't know about the engine, but I've modified the panels more than once:mad: FIM chip, 45mm Termis, 41T rear sprocket, alloy clutch and vented cover so I can hear the rattling better, (or to save the clutch when it goes down again:mad:) Nothing really....but there are some on the site that have done heaps of fettling. Swapped the engine in the 748RS for a 998BP engine, The 916BP will soon be swapping its exhaust for a 54mm system and then after I kill the engine off I'll fit a 996 engine As for the 955 Corse, ex GSE engine with 54mm Twin injectors, what more can be done, was thinking of trying the 54mm Shower injectors off the 748RS engine and may have to talk to JHP about fitting a starter motor. |
Only one: fitted a starter motor.:D |

I'd have swapped you Felix, mine has one as standard ;) |
Phase 1. Strada 996 engine, dialled cams, FIM single injector chip, 45/50mm spaghetti headers and Termi cans, one tooth off the front. Phase 2. Arrow Ti rods, Cosworth Hi comp pistons (exact CR to be agreed) lightened and balanced bottom end, 431 inlets and G exhaust cams - and maybe some valve/port work. Back to twin injectors if necessary. |
Felix, what battery are you running and what is the starting like, must get mine done sometime, other plans are coming together so I intend to build it up to replace the two track Ducatis I hope to be selling. |
 Cool. I can see that there are some beefy engine mods out there! I have a 853 conversion, dialed in cams, minor head work, FIM chip, Termis in carbon(45/50mm) And a top end blue print. Oh, and the standard vented clutch cover for the proper Ducati sounding clutch:cool:. If i had the spare dosh i think i would like to try different cams and the full big bore race exhaust. If it would get me more power. [Edited on 6-3-2004 by DARKCURSE] |
:D One other thing i wanted to ask. Is it worth getting the flywheel lightend. I have heard stories of bikes that have had it done that do not tick over properly afterwoods. But i have also heard about how it makes the engine pick up quicker and rev smoother. |
DC I have the lightened flywheel fitted (courtesy of Sigma Performance) and the tickover does seem to be a little laboured at first but once up to temperature it does seem fine. It did take some of the character out of the engine as it smooths it all out, at first I didn't like it but have since got used to it .... Did you buy yours as an 853 or get it done yourself ..??? |

Hello Dibble, I had sigma carry out the engine work. I found Neil to be a top bloke. Since i have managed to get my engine run in. I think it is exellent. The 748 was my arrival into Ducati ownership. I loved the bike but coming off of an R1. I did find the engine a tiny bit gutless. The 853 conversion really had made it a truly brilliant bike to ride. It spins up real quick like a 748 should do. But now has grunt to match. It makes power longer and carrys on where the 748 would start to tail off. According to Neil at sigma, it makes roughly the same power as a standard 916. It also lifts the front coming out of corners when cranked over. A bit like my old R1. |
Skidlids, as standard without the starter motor, the battery is a YTX4. When I fitted the starter motor two years ago, I switched to a YTX7, which is the biggest battery that still fits into the race battery tray. The YTX7 is the same width and depth, just taller. I've run it like that with the race alternator for two years now, and it works just fine. Just make sure you get it fully charged before a trackday/race meet. It cranks the starter without any problems. |
Thanks for the info Felix, the 748RS came with a YTX7 battery in its samll carbon fibre battery tray, so it looks like that will also be getting fitted to the 955 along with a lot of other bits from the RS |
DC Neils a top boy, he comes on our Kent ride outs, you'll have to get yerself this side of the river one sunday mate .... |

853 conversion oil cooler 52mm jhp exhaustes jhp chip jhp air filter (keeps the **** out) jhp vented clutch and red pressure plate jhp clutch slave cylinder jhp sprocket cover AP cast iron floating discs |

Hello mate, I see that you have listed an oil cooler. Now............ Did you fix this to the bike because of the 853 conversion or was it already there when you had it done? The other thing, are the Ap racing cast iron discs any good? Cheers, DC. |
955sp3 955 high comp piston/barrel kit 36mm inlet valves, 31mm exhaust valves, corse gearbox, crank balance, cylinder head porting, stm slipper clutch, 54mm exhaust. All engine work done by AJ Racing. Mmm... |
Really happy with my 998s Mono. Fitted 50mm Termi`s DP engine management unit. JHP undertank filter system. and will soon fit larger mesg to fairing air intakes. Love it to bits and goes like stink since fitting |JHP filter!:D |
Hi , 998s with high comp pistons, titanium collets, gas flowed head,[squish @ valve drop set],corse gearbox& clutch, balanced crank, lightened flywheel, bored inj. bodies[58mm],60mm system, raised rev limit, power commander, large airbox @ airducts, corse crankcase breather @ large ms rad , can,t thinkof owt else off hand , e mail if any questions, hope this is of some use  |
Hi DARKCURSE I had the oil cooler fitted the same time as the 853 kit, thought it was the right thing to do even if it is only for my piece of mind. The AP brakes are brill much better than the standard 748s discs as these warped within 3000 miles! They have more feel and the stopping power is great even with the standard brembo calipers fitted, although i am keeping a look out for some AP calipers. |

I'm thinking of having similar done to my 998 (+titan rods and S cams) do you have before and after dyno charts mate? :) |
