Recall - Oil Cooler Beware all riders of 999's. Just received a recall on my bike. Apparently there is a possibility of the oil cooler failing and dumping all the oil on the rear tyre..........nice !!!!! Suggest you all get yours checked ASAP....would hate to hear of someone going down as a result of this. |
Happened to mine within first 600 miles. Came out to start it, left it warming to put jacket on and oil was spurting into belly pan and onto floor. As I understand it, the original is Jap and it is replaced with identical KTM unit. On my original, the leak was from the top left just near to the top most hose connection (when viewed from within fairing). I now leave the bike on tickover for a minute and checking for oil drips is the last thing before setting off. |
Logyk & Alan E Thanks for the heads-up here. I've had no problem so far, but I phoned my garage anyway. They inform me that my 999S will need this work. When I think of what might have happened ... :( Thanks again! |
Having phoned Ducati Uk the 999 chassis No's affected are ZZMH400AA2B000001 - 007801 There were 2 types used a KTM and a TOYO if its the KTM then its probably needs replacing. The TOYO is apparently ok.As i'm going to WDW next week i was getting anxious but thank fully my 999 fitted with the TOYO |
Infected oil cooler!! How do you tell the differrence between KTM and Toyo oil coolers? |
Got my recall letter on Saturday............... ...............my frame number being near the end of the batch. Done about 1600 miles now with no problems but will still get it checked out pronto.:cool: |
hate to say "I told you so" but... http://217.199.188.40/xmb/viewthread...=5688#pid45365 |
Yep,got my recall notice today. Is there anything stamped or printed on the oil cooler to determine the manufacturer?:puzzled: |
If you take off the right hand side body panel or if if your lucky you may be able to see it without removing the panel. The difference is the TOYO oil cooler has a sticker on the top with the words TOYO in white lettering, the KTM apparently has no ID. I hope this helps. |
bugger... mine chassis no is just inside the recall, will check to see whats fitted. |
i received my letter this morning and have sent it back as i traded my 749 in for a YELLOW 998, only picked it up yesterday and i haven't stopped grinning.:):):):):), p.s paul hope to see you on sunday at J.H's |

1600 miles!!!!!!!:o:o:o,Dave, you need to get out more!;) Checked my cooler today,....its a Toyo. You can see the sticker(?) from the letterbox style opening in the fairing V piece. BTW,mine's done 4,000 miles with no probs.:) |
Although my 999S frame number was in the target zone, I have a Toyo oil cooler already, so no replacement required! This was confirmed by the dealer today. Yippee! |
Need to get mine sorted for next week...... wot a pain in the bum !! [Edited on 23-5-2004 by dave w] |
Hi I know there are a few threads about this, but just a heads-up, after my experience... 1) Don't assume "no letter from Ducati" means your bike is ok. I called Ducati a while back, as I didn't get a letter but wanted to be sure. Turns out they didn't know I was the owner of that bike (my dealer hadn't properly registered the bike with my details. ). I then received a letter from them to get it checked. (it's at the dealer now...) 2) It's not just 999 that are being recalled - 749 are effected too. Definately worth getting it checked....it'll only end in tears and probably a hospital visit if it does leak while you're out one day... Marco |
