Things looking up? 18 active posts today on DSC (only 14 on ISC but a mighty 100 on ducatisti). We have the trackday and the AGM coming up, both of which will be important for me in deciding whether to continue in this club. I hardly ever use the other websites, other than to see what people are up to and I don't have a Ducati anymore, although, never say never, I still fancy a little 696 in red. My membership is due now, in fact it's now lapsed. I only really keep paying my £20 for a few reasons: 1. The DSC trackday is the best couple of days on track bar none and I enjoy instructing on it. (I can go on as many trackdays as I like obviously). I wonder how many people I will know at this years event - I used to know pretty much everyone and everyone knew me, I very much doubt that will be the case this year! 2. Pronto is still worth having and I enjoy writing for it and reading other people's articles. (but then I write other places and can buy a bike mag every month). 3. This has been and could still be a good club and I don't want to see it go down for the sake of people like me giving up. There are plenty out there who are praying the DSC trackday will be empty and we'll lose money and it won't be a success and DUK will find something wrong with the accounts and members will diminish until the club folds etc etc blah blah, they can't wait to see it fail to rub people's noses in it and justify their own actions in their minds, but I would like to see it rise from the ashes. However, I find it hard to see how it will grow and develop with so many people leaving and no real change whatsoever since last year (don't mention the war). Is the AGM still on at the trackday? Yes it is, but you'd hardly notice as there has been so little mentioned. (is this deliberate?). I have to pay my £20 to attend the trackday and I'll probably do that because I promised Monty I would and he's a friend), but this could be it for me unless I see some real change following the AGM. What are active posts? Threads with new posts today? If so DSC 20, ISC 23.... ;) |
yes, threads with a reply today, was 18:14:100 when I wrote this, clearly not a contest, room for all etc, just a comparison...some people are more chatty than others, some like to talk the legs off a donkey...some are donkeys for that matter.....tee hee If I keep answering my own posts I could get the numbers up (and of course get the perfect answer), but don't particularly like talking to myself..... :-) I would like to see all 'clubs' succeed WeeJohnyB |
Hi John, There will be a group up from the Hants region, so at least you'll recognise some of the attendees ;) You better be there, still need some tuition and some virgin sliders that need to be introduced to tarmac :D As for the AGM and any real changes resulting from it, historical data doesn't seem to show that this is likely unfortunately :( I too now frequent other Ducati related sites (clubs) and continue to make new friends along with many "old" ones, ride and socialise with them all, :)the reason I joined THIS club in the first place. Could be a while before you see any phoenixes :( See ya there for a great couple of days. |
Are things looking up ? To me the DSC was always about like minded people getting together to enjoy shared interests, such as Ducati ownership and racing. Trips to Silverstone to watch some guy known as WJB race a TZ250 owned by some old codger known as Monty, or poping along to the 2002 Megameet to try and catch up with a few more names that I knew from the vibrant message board that had proved me with lots of useful info and some badly needed parts to get my first Ducati on the road. I soon got to know quite a few members but had no real idea of who the MT were or if they even existed, all I Knew is that things happened such as the Hospitality dinners, BMF and the DSC trackdays, Monthly meets/rideouts etc were the terrain of the regular members, friends getting together for a chin wag and a ride. There seemed a ceratinm harmony to it all so it does beg the question where did things go wrong Was it Egos, was it DD, did the club just get to bigor did it fail to move with the times. If the answer is known then maybe the situation can be rectified, whats broken and how can it be fixed. From my perspective the regular members have moved on for what ever reason as could be seen from those that turned out for the rideout to the Ace Cafe, if truth be told the same small group of us would have been getting together even if the DSC had never existed as we were mates prior to our Ducati ownership and will remain so along time after. Still I'm looking forward to the DSC trackday at Cadwell on the 15th/16th June and catching up with friends I haven't seen for a while and as with all my years in the DSC I'll attend the AGM and support those that are brave enough to step forward to help with the running of the club, me I'm not that brave !!! |

Nah thats fine, was just trying to work out what the statistic was! I am no longer a member and won't be for the foreseeable future. Having said that I hope everything the club does is a success and maybe once the dust settles and the positions are clear I will rejoin...... |
Bugger...just typed my thoughts out on this and lost the damned lot. That's what you get for typing at the end of a long day and hitting the 'back' button instead of 'post' I'm going to bed now so I'll do it in the morning |
Quality, not quantity is what counts. |
You said it Chris, there is some utter tosh written on some websites. WeeJohnyB |

OK, after a long day at work, finally got some time to offer some response. For most of my time in the DSC I've been straightforward member, the same as anybody else. I put myself forward for the MT a few years back as Regional Coordinator and spent about 9 months doing that before stepping down due to a series of very difficult personal circumstances. I put myself forward for election onto the MT as Pronto Editor at last years attempted AGM, mostly because the MT would not have had enough members for the club to continue if people hadn't stepped up. So, out of 7 years membership, some 18 months in total on the MT. As an ordinary member, I tried to maintain an objective, mature and thoughtful approach to any issues that affected the club, also taking care to find out all the information I could, from every angle, before making my mind up. I am also scrupulously honest and straightforward. I have never been part of anybody elses agenda and never will be, I have my own forthright views that I am more than willing to stand up for, and I haven't changed a lifetime's values simply because I'm now on the MT of a small bike club. That's the background, so what I can tell you with complete candour is the story from both sides of the fence. The MT is currently made up of 5 elected members and a couple of co-opted people. That's not nearly enough to create a critical mass of folks to get their shoulder to the wheel and keep the momentum going. We really need more people to step up, contribute whatever they can to the running of the club and help move us forward. As Skids said, some people are not brave enough because to join the MT is to invite incessant negativity and vitriol from some self-appointed critics, especially in past years. Thankfully, those days seem to have passed, at least on this site, and I have not been subject to any personal abuse. So, what if you do put yourself forward and get elected, what will you find when you get onto the MT? Well, what you won't find is a professional management team, just a bunch of well meaning amateurs trying to run a decent bike club in an appropriate manner. We all have other lives and other commitments and, not surprisingly, people often put their family and work commitments ahead of the DSC. Have you ever tried getting a few mates together for a beer, or a game of golf , or whatever social event? A nightmare trying to get everyone's calendars in sync isn't it? Before you know it weeks and months have been added to your intended meeting date. It's the same with MT meetings, despite the fact that we've all got target dates in the calendar for MT meetings none of us are in a position to say to our bosses "I can't do that shift or that business trip, I've got a bike club to run" or say to our partners "Whose birthday? Yours? Sorry I've got a DSC meeting". Life gets in the way and we all have to balance our commitment to the DSC with life's realities before getting lined up to meet. Of course we do meet in a regular if rather elastic, haphazard sort of way, and have phone conferences when it's impossible to meet face-to-face (remember we're also scattered all over the country geographically), so things do get done - just at a creakingly slow pace that frustrates me as much as anybody. When we do some of these things, some stuff gets done very well, other stuff gets done acceptably well and we make a complete ******** of other stuff - Communication being one of the rubbish bits, just like any other management team you can think of. But think of what has actually happened since September when the club was within a whisker of implosion. We have new posting rules, new moderators and there is a policy is place that the rules and moderation are as 'light touch' as possible, and yet this board has stabilised and there are very, very few flame wars (I hope that's not because we also have very few posts by our standards  ). I am also hard pressed to remember the last time that anybody's post was pulled or somebody's views were censored - although I'm not a moderator so I don't have a total insight on that. Of course some of the 'traditional' events have been organised for members once again - the forthcoming track day being the biggest of these, and I said when I took on the Pronto editorship that you would get a Winter, Spring, Summer and Autmn edition of Pronto and members have had the Winter and Spring copies as promised. There is still a mountain to climb, but what I can tell you is that the MT genuinely tries to do it's best by all members of this club, so quite where the conspiracy theorists get their 'insight' from God only knows - C O C K Ups? Yep, plenty of those, but conspiracy theories? Nah, not unless I'm intensely naive and stupid. Ooooh look, and how long has it been since the last 'War and Peace' post from Jools? There's another deliverable ;) Have you missed me? |
the problem is that when your looking up......you miss whats right in front of you.... |
I agree the forum does seem friendlier and without the general bitchiness that was ever present at one time. The DSC maybe somewhat quieter but thats not an entirely bad thing IMO. I am an occasional forumite on the ISC as well as other unrelated to motorbike forums and obviously the ISC is the new home for many ex DSC'ers and thats good as long as they dont spend time sniping. My only disillusionment with the MT is that at the nearly AGM promises were made and although made in good faith Im either missing something or they have not been made good. Having said that as Im not in a position to offer any assistance to the MT I feel unable to criticise them too harshly either. This is because they give their time freely and ar able to do so. |

Jools, that will be coz there is hardly anyone here!! lets face it, the board is close to dead at the mo, has been since it was closed last year for months, and nothing is happening to try and resurrect it that I can see, and its the same peolpe posting all the time in a vein attempt to keep the pulse beating |
I see green shoots!!! ;) In reality the DSC trackday will offer a real litmus test for where the club currently is. Is the DSC as good as it was? No, but is it as bad as it was? No. It should be a club that offers benefits and value to members and potential members alike. Where visits to the board or engagements / meetings with members should be a positive experience. It's about people; individuals making an effort and contributing positively to the greater good that will slowly rebuild the club. It may never be the club it was before, but maybe it doesn't have to be? Amen  |
Ask not what your DSC message board can do for you,.... Splitters. |
It's only if's, but's and maybe's... Perhaps if the MT had put as much enthusiasm into the regions as it did into DD some 3 or 4 years ago then maybe a lot of people wouldn't have gotten so disenchanted and then maybe the "troubles" wouldn't have been such a disaster for this club. When I was running DSC Sussex we had an active, vibrant region that seemed to dissolve as soon as I stepped down. The same seems to have happened in Surrey! What are the MT doing to keep BHCN alive? Perhaps if the MT had had any notion of responsibility to the clubs lifeblood (then as now, the regional membership) then maybe things could have been different, but it seemed that you had to have the same opinion as the MT or you got pushed aside or even expelled! I'm not going to be fit enough to ride this years trackday which is the only benefit to me and I'm not sure whether to renew in September. It really doesn't matter now as this AGM'll just go the same way as every other AGM I've been to over the past few years and nothing will change except my membership status, maybe it's too late for any change, much like the attitudes of some... :p |
okay, so a few thoughts from me. Firstly, I used to be a member, but chose not to rejoin. My reason had nothing to do with what went on, because to be honest I was not visiting the forum at that time, and the first I knew was when the forum was already locked. I wasn't even getting time to read the Pronto. I would much rather have a forum like this where there is a healthy level of inteligent posting, with a low noise threshhold. Sure, there will always be banter, there has to be. That is what you get between a bunch of mates. I have never been involoved in the racing side of the club, so for me there was little incentive to pay money to be a member. As for the regional meets, this club is no different to any other in that there will always be a group of people that do the majority of the work, and are also the people that keep the areas active. Trying to get people who have left to pastures new to come back is always hard work. Its easier to try to get fresh members, because they don't have the baggage of what has happened in the past so could happen again. I have other comments but given that most of you probably don't know me, your probably dismiss them anyway ;) In closing, keep up the good work guys. It is a thankless task, but some of us to recognise the effort and are grateful for it. Cheers, John. |
Mr Psychlist dear boy, how lovely to see you on the site, hope you are on the mend mate. I don't disagree with what you are saying, (and appreciate all the history), but every club is run by a couple of individuals, plus a few who do stuff and 99% who do nothing except be a member (which is absolutely right). The old 'you only get out what you put in' doesn't really apply as long as people are happy to depend on others to do stuff and the others are happy to do it. (if you see what I mean). When I set up what was the BHC all those years ago, there was nothing at all locally. I got help from the then MT with a list of members in the area and an address to write to ask if they wanted to come on the first ever local rideout. I was very lucky that Fordie, Jools, Keefyb, David Cook and Monty showed up and we've been friends ever since. We were also lucky that when I gave it up, Fordie stepped up to the plate. Your question however is a very valid one. What are the MT doing to maintain and develop one of the most active regions in the country? Every region is slightly different, but I bet they all have one thing in common - they are like mini-versions of the club in that they are run by one or two people and without that person, little gets done as most people (it's their right) are happy to participate but not organise - that's their right as a member and quite rightly so. I am not at all surprised that Sussex and Surry both 'disolved' after key people stepped down, but if BHNC dwindles away to nothing, it will be a sad day. Most if not all the regional events are organised locally, eg BMF by BHNC, Popham by Roy, Raid the lakes by the NW guys etc etc.A regional coordinator on the MT should be ensuring there is a proactive person running the region and that good ideas are shared around and there is enough organised locally to keep people interested. But none of us can expect the MT to do everything and in my view, they should be dealing with the big stuff and ensuring their is an infrasructure in place to encourage members to organise things locally. For example, one of the best things I ever did with the DSC was the trip the BHC (and some others) made to Yorkshire and met up with the boys up north, brilliant, absolutely brilliant and a lasting memory, but all organised over the board and a few emails and calls, job done (with no MT input) Now if the MT are serious about the regional structure and 'grass roots' of the club, then they should use some of the £20,000 they have stashed away to buy me a Ducati and I will be delighted to run a thriving region. WeeJohnyB |
one of the reason Hants still gets on is that there are more than 1 or 2 organising things. |
Quote:
And that is to the great benefit of the Hants group Paul, the problem is as WJB points out in the main it will always be one or two people who do everything. As most people know I am one of the 3 remaining 'founder' members, was on the MT until I stepped down 18 months ago, been chairman twice, and have organised the trackday since I started it 5 or is it 6 years ago. I hardly rode anything last year-went out with the BHCN once, can't ride this year because of the operation on my wrist, but will be back next year. However, as an official 'old git' like Fordie think maybe it is time for some of the younger guys to organise things-anyone want to run the trackday??-thought not-so I shall just have to keep on with it won't I? John |
and I understand how lucky we are because of that and it illustrates WJBs point exactly. However, I have noticed the hants mob getting smaller, and activities slightly less. Trouble is, its difficult to pin how much of this is natural attrition, ie peolpe moving on or looking for a change, and as said before on this thread, what is being done to produce new members who will have that initial interest and enthusiasm needed to harness so you can pass the TD on to another safe pair of hands |
Just what does anyone RO or whoever expect the MT to do in the regions? Basically if I wanna do something with or for the DSC I just do it, no need to ask the MT for permission, occasionally if its something out of the ordinary I might let one or two of them know but that’s it. If I’ve needed something from the club like the banners or whatever I’ve asked. The DIY approach works if I get any support it’s a bonus. The doers in this club are what make it, or any other club for that matter. Like it’s been said 1,000,001 times there is a core of doers, and no you don’t have to be on the MT, and RO to be a doer. All too often though the doers are pulled to bits by the nay sayers, this isn’t right, that isn’t right, I’m only thinking of other members, blah, blah, blah. Fine say yer piece, but unless you are prepared to DO something, leave it at that. Oh and if what you do doesn’t work than maybe not many others think it was such a great idea anyway. I've had plenty of shite ideas in my time... Times change, people buy Ducatis, people sell Ducatis, people take up biking people pack it in other things take up peoples time etc. Again there’s a core of people you see very regularly or rides and stuff, you won’t please all of the people all of the time and it’s not unusual not to see some members for year in year out. c'est la Vie It’s a thankless task being a doer, why do we do it? Because you want to share the enjoyment of riding yer Ducati on road or track, just talk about Ducatis, write about 'em or whatever. The thank yous after a ride/meet make it worthwhile, even the fact that some acknowledge what you are doing is a thankless task keeps you going. Like WJB says the trackday is a vital part of what the club does and it’s pretty much unique now in the UK running its own trackday, its run by members for members. What is it with the pre occupation with the internerd…………..in the DSC context it’s just a way of communicating what’s going on, asking for help, questions and occasionally spouting off. Sure it’s a useful tool but it’s no substitute for getting out in the real world. How long to cadwell……………..:D Ray |

5 weeks 3 days Ray-and counting-see you there. ;) John |
An interesting series of posts! Now as one of the other remaining original founders of the Club. I am in part in a similar position to Monty. Apart from the general admin part of the Club that I do because I am currently Treasurer and Club Secretary, which probably takes about 7-10 hours per week, together with the work that has to go into Desmo Due helping Gordon out with running that. Several times I have been asked why I dont run a region, attend rideouts all over the Country, etc. I think the short answer is three things: 1) Time or more partuclarly lack of it. I have activities outside of the Club that I/the family enjoy which often have a higher priority. 2) I have done my time running local regional activities after 20 years of it, giving up about 7 years ago. 3) These days I am not prepared to ride as fast as I might have done 10 years ago and quite frankly no longer enjoy riding in groups. Now like John, I help out with the trackday, doing the initial admin and plan on being at Cadwell to help with the admin there and hopefully get out for a few sessions. Now that means two days off work and the admin comes 1st, that has to be negotiated with "she who is sometimes listened too", because quite frankly she sees it as a waste of two days vaccation time. Much has been made on other forums of the time and effort that I put into organising the UK end of the Moto Giro d'Italia and Septembers Mini Giro. Well we spent a happy day yesterday loading 40+ motor cycles onto the truck for next weeks event in Italy. In two weeks time we will be spending another day unloading the truck! Given the logistics of getting bikes out to Italy, especially 50 year old small capacity ones, the only way in which we can do it ecenomically is by getting together as a group of like minded individuals and doing bulk transport. The DSC is an ideal vehicle for the people who enjoy these or other events to come together This years Mini Giro is still being worked on and cannot yet be announced until we have more confirmation in writing from various parties. But I am looking at 3 complete weekends of solid work just to sort out the routes, apply for the necessary permissions and anything else that needs doing in June alone. Why do we do it, simple there is nothing better than people coming up and saying I have had a great time, can I come next year. There is however a great difference between that sort of scenario where you are offering to do an event because you want to and one where you are expected to put all of the effort in to organise something and then people on a whim decide to turn up or not on the day. We all have to put effort into our social activities, with our friends and families; what is the difference with Club? I cant remember the exact quote from John Kennedy, but I think it went something like this: "Dont ask what your Country can do for you, ask what you can do for your Country!" Substitute Club for Country and you probably have it. If you put nothing in, what do you expect to get out? |

Better an old git like you doing it correctly and it therefore happening, rather than a younger git like me c***ing it up and ending up without it. Hence my appreciation for anybody that gets off that back side and makes things happen especially when they aren't paid to do so. |
Nice post Chris and fully appreciate all the work you do for the DSC and agree with your tone right up to the last line. I think there is a place for people who do nothing but enjoy the club (and they do actually do something - they pay their membership!). I am more than happy that a few people put in some/a lot of effort for the enjoyment of others, eg for the trackday, a few people will see 100+ members and countless others have a fantastic couple of days. Where I do agree is where people have a go at the 'doers' as Ray says without digging in their own time pocket and putting their money/time where their mouth is. I have been as guilty as many by suggesting what I think are good ideas - my perception may not agree with others and I am very unlikely to have all the facts to hand to know whether it is possible, so sometimes 'good' ideas will fall on apparently deaf ears. Hence I hear people saying 'I said we should do this and nobody took any notice', which is near useless without action on their part. I do a little where I can, as do some others. As Ray says, just do it, some things don't need the sign off from the MT, but other big things do. As long as people are happy being a 'doer' then I'm happy for me and for them. It's when the workload or grief (abuse/threats!?!) overtake the pleasure that it's not right. Hopefully that balance has seen some improvement in the past few months. It wouldn't surpirise me if some of the MT stepped down this year, it's been a hard term in office for some. I just hope others come forward and we can have a democratic MT that runs a great bike club WeeJohnyB |

John, Perhaps I got that last bit wrong, what I suppose I was meaning was more along the lines of dont knock other peoples efforts, if you are not prepared to step up to the plate and put some effort in yourself. If you do want to lean back and not participate, then that is anyone's right. However in much the same way that we have become ever more watchfull of public servants and in particular MPs, they are paid to work for us by us the taxpayer. The members of the MT, RO's and others who put in an awful lot of effort on behalf of the Club and the membership are a group of un-paid volunteers, who use their own time, money, etc for the benefit of others. If you are not happy with what they are doing that is what we have an AGM for, put your name down and step up to the plate then make that change. I got copied in on something from another site regarding the content of Pronto last week. The person in question was bemoaning the fact that he was reading about similar articals from the same group of people. To the best of my knowledge that person has never submitted anything to Pronto for publication, but expects that others will write the articals that he wishes to read for his enjoyment; I am afraid that life just doesn't work that way. I think that we will see at the AGM at Cadwell on the Monday night, that an enourmous amount of progress has been made over the last 6 months. A lot of the background activities that have been going on since the EGM are now coming to fruition. Some hard questions have been asked and I would hope that they will be answered at that meeting. |
Interesting thread. I wonder how many other people are sitting reading this and thinking "I'd like to put something back in to the club/improve this that or the other/try something new" but then reality sets in and lack of time or expertise brings it all to a crashing halt? I know I'm one of those, and I have to admire those who DO find the time/effort to get involved with the running of this, or any, club. I have also long thought that it was a shame that some of those who do or did find the time and effort for long, contentious posting wars didn't channel the effort more positively. Or maybe I just type slowly? Look forward to the trackday and seeing some older faces! |
me again. I really have no idea of exactly what went on last year, but as a visitor to this site I'd like to say I'm very happy with what I see and the advice I receive from you guys. I agree with most of what you guys are saying. I'm the chairman of another club, and what you guys are discussing is no different to any other organisation that uses unpaid volunteers. Its often a nightmare trying to get people to come forward to help, and most feedback is negative without being constructive on how to address issues. Even the constructive feedback is often a problem as many people have opinions on how something should be done, and can't understand why its not done that way. You guys have a very difficult job: you can never please all of the people all of the time, and often people only shout when they are not happy, so that is taken as the overriding feeling despite the fact it may only be 1% of the club. My hats off to all of you for what you do. If I could I would help, but I too spend a disproportionate amout of time helping the other club I belong to try to run smoothly. So, once again I'd like to say a big thank you to all you guys, keep up the good work as it really is appreciated by some of us. Cheers, John. |
a lot of really interesting facts and opinions, most of which I concur with in one form or another. Also, most miss the key point; peolpe HAVE put forward themeselves, their time and their ideas, and are normally met by a wall of silence at best. So much so there is no one left to offer... and this 'ask not...' attitude tbh is way off the mark; members pay a subscription and therefore rightly have the belief they should get something back...where are the pin badges? the stickers? an easy example of the kind of things which showed some value if someone else came forward, and had the appetite, enthusiasm and expereince, and wanted to take the club on, would they be welcomed? if its such a hardship to keep it running, and life changes we all know that along with commitments, it will be easy to pass the reigns to such person, woudlnt it? Alas history appears that is not the case; there is a hardcore at the centre, which were pivotal in building the club, who either seem to have lost the appetite or other things have taken over oin their lives...yet they still refuse to pass the challis over to move to the next era I have been umming and arrring about the TD this year, as my membership lapsed in Feb and no DD means theres no other reason anymore to renew. The form is done, the Ducati is in the garage, but I still havent posted it. I think I now know why, and I wont be. I read my own post with a hint of a smile- on the ISC I'm seen as pro MT, by some on here anti MT, yet always post in the same manner...go figure :) |
I always thought you were a pro Paul ;-) |

I dont go nowhere near the paper/membership/club owners type thing anymore. Dont care about any of that anymore. I cant offer much here as I'm a newby but I live in Sussex and ride with (well the last couple of times certainly) Hants - good bunch, took me in, left me behind. Another good post Chris B. Comunication is the key. Bradders, your post makes me think of the old days which I'd like to move on from. Chris says there have been progress, so I'm looking forward to hearing what these are and how whoever is in the MT (old or new) are going to run the club going forward for the good of the members. oh and bradders, look at the membership fee as simply the cost of going on the best 2 trackdays of the year with a bunch of mates on the best track around with a load of Ducatis, then if you don't want to be a member going forward, simply don't, (then do the same next year). See ya there dude WeeJohnyB |
