Alternative exhausts

Saw a well turned out and pretty new ST4S at WSB with stainless Remus cans & pipes.

Anyone gone down the route of changing their stock ones for aftermarket, and if so what are the options and convetional wisdom on this ?

Jools 19-Jun-2003 13:19

I think there was quite a thread about this on the old message board...

I've got Sil Motor carbon cans and a JHP chip to look after the fuelling.

As far as cans go, Ducati performance do carbon and ally ones as do Remus and Sil Motor. I'm told that Sil Motor and Termignoni are made by the same factory.

There may be others out there that do ST cans, but the choice is a bit limited by the moveable exhausts idea...so if aftermarket can manufacturers do anything for Dukes at all, you'll find that the 916 derivatives are well catered for closely followed by Monsters and SS's. The ST gets the cold shoulder from most.

I've just fitted some made by 'G & G Bike' that I found on www.redracingparts.com.

The thing I liked was the option to fit an insert which mutes the otherwise straight through can. Unfortunatley, I got mixed up on the order (doh!!) and am still awaiting the inserts.

The cans themselves, in titanium, are light and very well made. The titanium welding is just brilliant. Only thing is that without the inserts the cans are astonishingly loud and have set off the odd car alarm (Great!!!). I'm looking forward to the arrival of the inserts to achieve the middle ground between standard and anti-social.

Prices not too bad either and I'm sure the sticker can be changed for something a little more 'fashionable'.:lol:

G&G Pics...

I'm intrigued, but the photos on the red racing web site are tiny - would it be possible to to post pics of yours? And what about modding the 4s computer - afaik, there's no replaceable chip there and the FIM replacement disables the immobiliser. Combined with Ducati being unable to make up their mind about whether a new ECU is needed for new pipes on a 4s, we have a slightly perplexed owner..

Richardh,

I take some snaps over the weekend and try and post them early next week.

The inserts are now fitted and although still quite loud I'm much happier than with the straight-through style. Just a little bit less anti-social!!!

belthead 09-Jul-2003 17:26

From the site looks like they are Euro 347 a pair, but what's the story with the rockwool inserts being replaced every 4000 km. ?
Photos would be good to see.
Are you pleased that you bought them ?

richardh 11-Jul-2003 14:40

Dave - thanks for that - I'm off to France for the next week, so no hurry!

The official Ducati line on 'Performance exhaust's' for ST4S is that there is no 'Performance' ecu available anymore. The recomendation is that the dealer should just re-adjust the standard ecu to compensate.
That's ok then since my ST4S is having it's performance carbon cans fitted whilst being serviced at JHP Coventry next week.

Monty -

Last year , from the look at the old msg. board threads - you were looking at some £1250 all in, with new ECU etc.

Now that the ecu is being set by the dealer , what did you go for, what pipes, is it good, worth the dosh, and how closer to penury have you been driven ?

All info rec'd with interrest , as like the idea. ( and how long to fit ? )

Monty 21-Jul-2003 18:05

You're going to hate me mate. Bought some Ducati Performance carbon Cans from Fletch off this board, 3000 miles old £150! They sound lovely, although I thought they were a bit loud to start with. Fitting couldn't be easier, 2 screws and one spring secure them both, takes about 2 minutes to change them.:D

John

belthead 28-Jul-2003 17:40

Hate you I do at £150 a pair !!!!
Enjoy them and I will remain vaguely green.

Aotearoa 29-Jul-2003 10:59

I brought a pair of Aluminium oval Leo Vince's for mine ( second hand ) ...have no idea how they sound as they are in a box here and the bike is in a box in NZ...let you know in 2 months.
Have seen a couple of pairs on e-bay ...The Loot online is also worth a look as i have seen some there as well.

Martin Morrell 31-Jul-2003 12:06

;)got my new 4s comming this weekend anyone got good contact for some louder cans than the standard one??::yawn:

if only life was so good £150!!! for that sweet reverb i wish monty

Rushjob 31-Jul-2003 12:45

Nelly may be able to assist you Martin.....

Aotearoa 31-Jul-2003 13:15

If you really want to hear load ....i fired mine up with no cans on it !!! DAM DAM DAM ...my wife , who unfortunately was behind the bike at the time , nearly fouled her pants ...wouldn't say it sounded sweet but twas certainly LOUD!!:sing::sing:

PaulC 31-Jul-2003 15:12

Aussie option

As Monty will attest to, my ST2 sounds pretty good with a set of Australian made Staintune stainless pipes. Mine was the first to have them fitted and we had a few problems with the hitting the swingarm and centre stand, but this has since been sorted. They don't seal quite as well as the originals double seal at the join, which means it pops a bit on the overrun, but I don't mind this. If you speciify you can get the US version which has a removable insert in the end so you can vary your noise level. I have seen adverts for local distributors.

Paul James 01-Aug-2003 00:21

Why not just have the standard cans gutted, it keeps the markings on the outside and they sound quite loud. Mine sets off the odd car alarm and has the older generation running for cover in their Anderson shelters.

Martin Morrell 04-Aug-2003 10:42

Gutted how i may ask paul as im not that mechanically minded:o but i could wait in anticipation

Nelly any ideas/help

Monty 07-Aug-2003 10:37

Martin, Paul is refering to a 'Bora' conversion, cost is about £160 last time I checked. Baines Racing at Silverstone do them, and others I expect. I can confirm that Pauls ST2 is somewhat LOUD-I christened it the Lancaster Bomber since that's what it sounds like. The 2 valve bikes are always more noisy on cans than the 4 valve.

John

ST4 07-Aug-2003 12:09

My ST4 had the standard cans done before i bought it. Sounds awesome but way too loud to ride without ear plugs. I think the original owner paid about £170 to have them done. I also set off the odd car alarm but i can live with that and non of my neighbours have complained in the last year. If i'm working on it in the garage for any length of time i do have to wear ear defenders though!

Paul.

Bora Conversion

Hey there folks,

I am new to the forum and Ducatis as a whole. Absolutly loving my 2006 ST3s. I have been doing some reading and am most interested in this Bora conversion. or where can I get some decent Aftermarket cans? I am in the Rutland Area

How does the Bora conversion affect MOTs?

Thanks in advance.

Scotty

Blimey Scott - 11 year old thread revival is possibly a new record!

An ST sold on here recently with DP headers, I think from an S4Rs and a stubby Termi pipe that looked awesome.

Not sure about the ST3 though but noise does not seem to be the issue it used to be.

Good luck - Frank

Red Steve 04-Jan-2015 14:42

I've got Remus cans fitted to my ST3.They sound great and have no problems in passing the MOT
