Sheared bolt Just noticed the bolt (presumably) holding on my exhaust link pipe has sheared off, Is my only option get at the broken stub to remove the whole exhaust? While I have no great worries about riding it in the short term as it all seems secure enough,I will fix it,but if I have to disassemble all the pipework then I'll wait for a 'slow' day during the bad weather. Was there a washer on that?(didnt fit it myself y'see) |
I'd say yes looking at the markings |
The problem with the replacement link pipe is that it is rigidly bolted to the mount on the engine and there is a lot of stress on the small securing bolt. The original Cat has resilient mounts so allows some vibration and movement damping. On my link pipes the weld sheared on the mounting bracket. On yours the bolt sheared. Its easy enough to remove if you also take off the silencers first (Two clamps and one mounting bolt). You may also have to undo the forward cylinder exhaust manifold bolts to get enough movement. The biggest problem is getting the exhaust branch pipes to seal again. may be worth getting two (or more) exhaust seal rings before you start. I destroyed two in my initial efforts before I got it right!! My link pipe is presently for sale on Ebay if anyone is interested!! G |
I was looking to get the type 2 one ot go with my slip on can, this is rather worrying:o:o Can the original rubber mounts not be used on the new pipe? or if not a rubber washer and steel washers could be used i guess :D:D Seems a bit wrong for it not to be rubber mounted somewhere along the pipe bound to cause problems:(:( |
The problem, as can be seen from Dave G's photo, is that the small bolt is not central to the mounting bracket hole. This is the problem I had. If the hole was drilled out to larger diameter and larger steel and rubber washers were used then I think the problem would be resolved. The original Cat is resiliently supported on both sides of engine, presumably because of its weight. Unfortunately these same mounts cannot be used because of the design of link pipe/bracket. If I were refitting mine I think I'd get local welding shop to modify the bracket so that it is able to utilise the original mounting. Wouldn't take much doing Im sure. G |
