What the Pieman said, Re. switches and suspension.
I have a R1100S as well as the 888. As for keeping the licence, pah! You'd be amazed what you get away with riding some 1923, tractor technology. I can't think of another bike I'd want for the big mile, 'cross Europe hols, cept maybe the new GS when the bugs are ironed out. My local dealer is excellent, and Mondial assiatance is awsome.
