The Oscar contenders: Ray has a good performance by Foxx, and the music sequences are great, but the film is a pretty average biopic really. Nowhere near as good as Bird (Eastwood's film about Charlie Parker, starring Forrest Whitaker). Million Dollar Baby is pretty good, but not the masterpiece some critics are saying. A twist to the story two-thirds through lifts it from being just another boxing flick. The Aviator is far from being Scorsese's best work, but a big step up from the turgid Gangs of New York. Leo de Caprio is very good indeed (and I'm not usually a fan). Great spot by Cate Blanchett, playing Katherine Hepburn. |
