But unfortunately the previous owner broke the top sidestand mounting lug when he hit a pothole (it was in a trailer) He knocked £100 of the price though and it was easily fixed with a small bracket using a rather handily placed spare threaded hole so i bought it anyway . Is the sidestand a weakness on modern Duke's , or am i just unlucky ?

Congratulations on the new bike Screwy, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
My SS had had the sidestand broken off and the repair made in the way you describe before I got it. I have heard of this repair being done elsewhere but I don't think it is very common. I can take a pic of it for you if you need to see how it goes together.
