Hit the nail on the head ... it IS down to riding style. I got lazy on the ST4s because you rarely had to worry what gear you were in (within reason), it just had the grint to get you out of corners, overtake, whatever without having to change gears. I have been told that the 748 was a bit gear happy but that is only hearsay, but the 749 jurt makes you work it a bit to ensure you are in the right gear for what you want to do.
