There is a utility in XP called Backup which will allow you to backup your profile (contains your IE favourites, printer settings, My Docs etc) or All profiles, or anything you want and back it up to a file on your hard drive somewhere.
You will need a second hard drive for this so you can format your original one for the reinstall.
