Kev, i've just had this very same error with a 999R. The ECU turned out be be no good. Replaced it and all was well.
The manual recoding didn't work either.
There is a "button pressing" procedure that brings up an error code or codes. The R brought 2 up. One relating to the com link and another to a bad key I think.
