Stu ... put like that (sensibly as you did) couldn't agree more about the 996R. But I'd rather have my 999R anyday.
As for the R1. I haven't ridden the latest model but rode 2000 and a 2003 reg model loads when my mate had one. Four of us used to ride, an R1, two blades and my SPS and we used to swap round regularly. Personally always prefered the blade actually and decided in the end to buy a VFR for work, commuting & two up touring but it just didn't do it for me.
In the end I chopped the VFR in for a MultiStuka and for everyday use that's the one I'd go for. I can't give you any tales of woe because every Duke I've ever owned (7 now) has always been super reliable and never let me down.
