Mood: Im Going to Italy soon!
If you drain it, then if there is a any liquid in it you know that it will be condensation and you need to get it out.
The other reason is that petrol goes off in about a month and can gum up the inside of the fuel pump, etc making it harder to start in the spring.

I have just finished sorting out a Pantah, that someone had left petrol in and the gunge in the carbs had gone hard like a varnish, I ended up replacing most of the jets, etc. The petrol taps I only just managed to save by soaking in thinners for 2 weeks!

Modern petrol is only good for leaving in tanks for short periods!
