I test rode a 749S (I was gone a long time, my dealer was getting concerned
)before I bought my '03 999S. Big difference in power characteristics. I'm not so good a rider that I could tell the difference between the 749's Showas and the 999S's Ohlins.
All this is a bit out of date though, as you're talking '05 and '06 now
