Not always Tony, they will run with a broken belt but obviously only on one cylinder! A classic symptom is a strong petrol smell as the injectors keep pumping fuel in but its not being burnt.
All that will happen really is the piston will keep going up and down and once its battered its way past any open valves either by bending the valve, breaking the rocker or whatever then it'll carry on running (on one pot).
