The choke lever should bring the revs up as well as richening the mixture. There is probably too much slack in the cable. It pulls on a linkage which slides across allowing the choke plungers on each carb to move out. You won't really be able to see what's happening without taking the airbox off. But I'm sure you'll be taking the time over the next few weeks to give the bike a good going over.
