I use an old washing-up pad (the ones with sponge on one side, and a
mildly abrasive pad on the other, soaked with lighter fluid (Ronsonol). A tin of lighter fluid is really handy to keep around the house. There's nothing better when you accidently tread oily bootmarks onto the living room carpet...
