As Frank says, your new battery won't last long if the regulator isn't working correctly.
Set the multimeter to read dc volts on a 0 to 20V range and connect it across the battery terminals. A good battery should be reading in excess of 12V. Then start the bike and see what it reads while the engine is running. At tickover you should expect to see at least 13V. If you rev the engine the reading will rise a bit but should go no higher than 14.5V. Anymore and the battery will get overcharged. You should get a reading of about 14V ±0.5V when the engine is at normal running speeds.
