my bike is a 2002 on a 2004 plate because it was a pre-reg, is this common ? Not that Im selling.

I would not try to hide it and anyone who has done research would know that a 2004 ST4 would be a pre reg.

As you said buyer beware, I would rather avoid the potential grief of selling privately and go for a part ex against another bike at a dealer. Maybe they are not as squeaky clean as they should be but at least there is the possibilty of redress.
