Well you see, a bunch of blokes who used to play the REAL rugby couldn't handle the constant physical contest for the ball so they started a game where you weren't allowed to compete for the ball when a player was tackled.
Then they realised that scrums were hard work and actually quite technical so they cut that out altogether and simply hug each other instead and the halfback feeds the ball in behind the second rowers legs.
So essentially, rugby league is a game invented by former rugby players who weren't hard enough.
Along the way people got bored with it so they had trouble mustering up players - hence dropping the number of players from 15 to 13. Incidentally, one got a little confused at the start of the game (they're a bit simple you see) so they got the players numbers all back to front as well. The fullback wears number 1 for example!
Still, it keeps the peasants from revolting so it serves it's purpose.
