If it's a second hand laptop then I'd actually recommend wiping it and re-installing the operating system. You never know what nasty Trojans may have been left on it by the previous owner.
If you want an office suite that's free and I find it just as good as MS Office (if you just want a regular word processor and decent presentation software, although MS Excel is the best) then try installing Open Office.
